I remember we students jubilating when Buhari won in 2015, we didn't know his government would be worse than the "Stealing is not corruption" era.

You're absolutely correct! Many people don't even understand how coups are plotted and executed! Tired of all these arguments sef. Sad to hear that someone like Pat Utomi will be blaring out such.

The issues in the North-Central are deep and complex. But they have been treated as Islamisation. First of all, the herdsmen-farmers clashes are part of a major sociological challenge in a transition society, transiting from an agrarian society towards an industrial society.

Fifty years ago, the herdsmen were principally entrepreneurs; they own their cattle and the land tenure system was different. But they were able to reach some kind of accommodation with the farmers. They were generally allowed in certain corridors, where crops were not planted. They didn’t bother farmers too much. But with time, our society became increasingly urbanised, the corridors. We do not do enough as a society to move into a ranch economy.

More than 30 years ago, we should have been there. Again, one of the failures of this country is failure in economic planning with continuity. As for back as the 1950s, Chief Obafemi Awolowo was setting up ranches especially a huge one in northern Ondo that has been disused for some time now. If we had continued with ranches at that time and if the railway system had not collapsed and we could have had a system in Yobe State or Jigawa processing meat put in cold storage in trains would get to Lagos within a day, the people would get their meat easily.

The second part of this sociological challenge is that these herdsmen are entrepreneurs 50 years ago, because you’ll see the cattle belonged to them. But today those cattle we see around probably belong to people in the National Assembly, some governors – even some southerners, who have invested in that business. The herdsmen basically are now labourers with no stake. They are, in fact, going through a transition crisis and there’s no brain to discuss the issue as it is and the simple answer is Islamisation.

Madam, all senior commanders from Brigades upwards are sounded about coups before hand. The sure sign they were not privy or did not tend to cooperate is that they are arrested during the coup and subsequently retired. And this is coming from someone who knows. They don't just 'bring' people in to lead from the blues. Every future senior appointment is decided in the planning of a coup. Nigeria is not one of those countries where Captains and Majors plan successful coups. It just cannot work.

I am not saying Buhari spearheaded the coup but to say he was not privy is impossible. If he was totally loyal to the then government he would certainly be dead because the oath he swore includes to protect the integrity of the government by the arms he bore. And to follow that would mean his head if the coup suceeded. What do you think will have happened to Babangida if Dimka was able counter strike.

I donot know if Utomi's assertion of anti-south ethnic bias in the coup planning is true. It sounds more like the same garbage we hear from politicians when they want to muddy the waters of reason but to absolve Buhari of acting against the constitution is wrong.

Buhari did not participate in that coup. He became head of state by accident. The ringleader, Brig. Ibrahim Bako, who would have been president was killed in crossfire on the coup night by Shagari's body guard, allegedly Col Tunde Ogbeha. Buhari was brought in from Jos on the insistence of Lt. Jokolo who became his ADC. IBB wanted to upstage Buhari and he and Abacha were not happy with Jokolo. The would-be emir paid dearly by deposition. If the coup was to stop Ekwueme, why was it at the dawn of Shagari's second tenure and not the twilight?

Mustafa Jokolo, who was buhais adc and later emir of gwandu, said same in his book, that the north felt by 1987 shagari would hand over to Ekwueme, and that 17 years after the war was too early for an igbo man to rule nigeria

Vatsa, was the Adjutant General of the Army at the time of the coup and was on leave, so he didn't participate in the coup because he was on leave. Among the senior officers that participated in the coup were, Babangida, Brigadier Bako, Abacha, Domkat Bali, Aliyu Gusau, etc. Among junior officers were Tunde Ogbeha, Major Jokolo, etc. Though Buhari knew about the coup and was kept in the loop by the principal plotters, he was not among the orchestrators. He wasn't called from Maiduguri, he was the GOC of 3rd Division, Jos at the time.

In that interview I said Nigeria would one day feel sorry that they had thrown the baby out with the bath water (as many rejoiced over the coup led by Gen. Now Listen in case you were not born yet then. Every body who was not "deaf & dumb" knew Buhari wanted to overthrow on October 1st 1983 during swearing in Ceremony after re-election. Deaf & dumb here means having no insider knowledge of goings-on. It was a surprise when it didn't happen. Umaru Dikko and others were persuading Shagari to wear a bullet proof vest under his Agbada on inauguration day.

Of course Buhari had a mole in the presidency who fed him everything back.

I was in a home of a journalist and frequented by many journalists, so I heard their discussions clearly as a kid. And also the home of an investigation service personnel. What I learnt firsthand as a kid about Nigerian intrigues many may never learn life long. Not to mention the number of both serving and retired military officers we knew back then.

Much earlier, on Shagari's visit to Jos/Plateau State, he told Chief Solomon Lar (Governor Of Plateau State then) about Buhari's coup plot. Of course as GOC in Jos Buhari went to see Shagari off at the airport. There Lar informed Buhari he'd visit him. But Buhari insisted he'd visit Lar in his office instead. On the visit Lar told Buhari of the coup rumours. Buhari swore that there was no such plot and asked to be dismissed from the army if not trusted. Buhari clearly expected to be arrested there and then. But he was let go. Reasons unknown till today.

Even years earlier, Buhari didn't want OBJ to hand over to a civilian govt. Buhari hid behind more junior officers to tell OBJ. Just like he'd hide behind junior officers to carry out the coup years later. But Yar'Adua, Danjuma and others supported OBJ and opted to follow Murtala Mohammed's handover time-table of October first 1979.

But OBJ had to act. He decided to deny Pa Awo the presidency (maybe to save his life and or democracy). According to the law that existed at election in 1979, if election was inconclusive but candidates' scores were very close, instead of a run-off election, the NASS will vote to choose the next president. Pa Awo already had the numbers in a deal at NASS. But OBJ decided to retrospectively change the decree to cover election already done and declare Shagari the winner.

Why did OBJ not retire Buhari like he did Shehu Yar'Adua, Danjuma? Maybe he wasn't considered as having the leadership quality or ambitious enough to marshal officers for a coup. His ambition was basically underestimated often. But no doubt he was the leader, albeit Dongoyaro, Abacha, Shagaya, IBB & Bako (who died trying to arrest Shagari) being the face of it.

BUT one person was not so naive: Umaru Dikko. He got Shagari to send Buhari to far away Jos, away from the important Ibadan, Lagos & Kaduna brigades. Dikko warned Shagari seriously about Buhari. But Fulanis hardly take action against each other.
Dikko turned out to be right.

When Buhari took over power, he decided to do everything to punish Dikko. because was so close to truncating his lifelong ambition to be head of state, a sense of entitlement common to Fulani officers. Including Buhari becoming Nigeria's first kidnap mastermind long before Billionaire kidnapper Evans! He kidnapped Dikko in London but was fuelled. Accusation of corruption was just convenient.

Dikko was Shagari's campaign manager & head of rice taskforce but not more corrupt than any average 9ja politician.

Now shall we ask how much of Rivers oil money Amaechi stole to buy delegates and fund Buhari's election as campaign manager? Then we can compare with Dikko.

FYI: the normal thing is a coup leader meant to take over as C-in-C is kept in a safe distant location during the coup itself. For example during IBB coup to remove Buhari, IBB was safely in Minna during the actual coup. The late Maryam Banbagida would say in an interview decades later that as people still wondered if the coup had succeeded, an Air Force jet picked up IBB from Minna to Lagos. She thought that was the last time she'd see him. She thought he must have been implicated and has just been arrested. Only for her to hear "My Fellow Nigerians" broadcast on TV later that IBB was now the new Head of State!
