Forty-nine out of the 55 members of the African Union have signed the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, said AU chairperson Paul Kagame.

Kagame, who is also the Rwandan president, made the announcement in Nouakchott during the closing ceremony of the 31st summit of the 55-member African Union.

South Africa, Sierra Leone, Namibia, Lesotho and Burundi signed the AfCFTA in Nouakchott.

Chad and Swaziland ratified the agreement, which brings the total number of ratification to six.

A minimum of 22 ratifications are required to enable the AfCFTA to come into force, while 15 ratifications for the protocol on free movement of persons, right of residence and right of establishment.

The AfCFTA will be the largest free trade area since the formation of the World Trade Organisation, according to the AU.

It could create an African market of over 1.2 billion people with a GDP of 2.5 trillion U.S. dollars, according to the pan-African bloc.

The AU said the deal was expected to improve the economic prosperity of the African nations removing barriers to trade, like tariffs and import quotas, allowing the free flow of goods and services between its members.

However, Nigeria and five other countries failed to sign the deal.

Countries that signed the AfCFTA Consolidated Text are Niger, Rwanda, Angola,

CAR., Chad, Comoros, Congo, Djibouti, The Gambia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritania, Mozambique, Cote’d’Ivoire, Seychelles, Algeria, Equatorial Guinea.

Others are Morocco, Swaziland, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, DRC, Guinea, Liberia, Libya,

Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, South Sudan, Uganda, Egypt, Ethiopia, Sao Tome and Principle, Togo and Tunisia.

To an extent i think refusal to sign it should help protect out own local industries. That will enable us monitor, control and check the inflow of products coming into our market.
However,in this century,no country is economically self sufficient.

Deal that will benefit Nigerians more than any African country buhari will not sign. He is more interested in a deal for Fulanis from other African countries that will give them access to lands in the middle belt. Nigeria is a country that kills its citizen, the country is an enemy of progress. angry

The way Nigeria is now, if Oyibo bring ship to start shipping people to the Europe/America for slave trade, people will be struggling to enter.

Why would he sign anything that might benefit the country, especially the traders and businesses which he thinks it's only igbos do. But he's wrong..

Watch as he will sign Palestine and Pakistan war agreement without even going through what he is signing.

That’s too much free trade Biko. All these African countries that let any toxic thing come in from Europe and Asia. They need to first deal with border porosity and standard of goods before they talk about free trade. We also have enough insecurity in our country to deal with. Not to talk of a potential bunch of terrorists using Morocco and Egypt and Mali as a gateway. I am glad we didn’t sign.

It's good to voice your opinions but if your parents didn't teach you how to honour specific people, teach yourself.

They are pastors and not political analysts. They have their jobs and are facing it. By the way, what makes you think they are happy with what's going on

Silence doesn't mean consent... contrary to public opinion.

Learn to give honour to whom honor is due... if they didn't teach you that or if you didn't learn it deliberately.

Look to political analysts and not pastors for political issues. Everyone has his job.

Thank you buhari. We don't want Nigeria to be flooded with commodity from others African countries that thinks Nigeria is just an opportunistic way to short cort success. Especially south Africa. Why is she signing on the day of the ceremony? Hoping Nigeria will change her mind? No way.

However,in this century,no country is economically self sufficient.

Signing such document will only mean death for our local industries especially with all this Francophone countries that only serves as transfer destinations for French products.

They will just be transferring all products imported from France directly into nigeria the only country that has the population to buy.

Signing such an agreement will never beenefit us especially now that we don’t produce enough products to consume let alone export.

We won’t have anything to export we will only be using our oil money to import goods thereby killing our local industries.

lilfreezy:

Competition drives innovation. Our local industry is not thriving because we are practicing a monopolistic economy and most of the time it's nepotism, everyman wants to favour his tribesmen. This deal will create room for a competitive economy.

For someone like me who is finding it difficult to do business in Nigeria i would definitely love to try other African countries. This deal will make it easier too

This is not the type of competition nigeria needs. This will be an unhealthy competition because the likes of francophone countries don’t produce anything. They only import from France and Belgium only to look for the economy where they will dump it.

So in essence, Nigerian products will not be competing with other African products but European products indirectly.

South African products are also superior to Nigeria’s so there’s hardly anything we can send to them to buy. Even with tariffs and all, Nigerians will still prefer South African or Europe produced products(francophone). If you now remove the tariffs, It will only be a one way traffic.
