LEADERSHIP - The new president of the Nigeria Football
Federation (NFF) has assured better welfare packages for
national team players and improved conditions of work for
staff of the football house, following restoration of his
mandate by Supreme Court verdict.
Giwa made the promises after taking over the NFF
secretariat on Monday, minutes after a press release from
the ministry of sports directed the incumbent board led by
Melvin Amaju Pinnick to vacate office, based on the apex
court’s ruling last month.
Under the new tenure, Giwa also promised a reinstatement
of camp allowances and bonuses to players in the youth
national teams and assured staff of the football ruling body
that he will run an open door policy, different from what
they faced under his predecessors.
He stated as much after a short meeting with members of
his executive committee, as the Jos-based football club
proprietor resumed as NFF president on Monday.
Meanwhile, deposed president of the NFF, Melvin Amaju
Pinnick is not giving up the seat without a fight, as he
insisted that he remains in charge of the soccer governing
body.
In spite of a directive from the office of the Anthony
General of the Federation (AGF) ordering him to obey the
Supreme Court ruling by quitting office alongside members
of the executive committee, Pinnick insists such orders are
not binding on FIFA.
He warned that Nigeria faces a possible ban by FIFA, since
the NFF is an affiliate of the global body and should
comply with its rules and regulations, among which is a
proviso that football matters should not be taken to regular
courts of law.
In a statement released on his behalf by Festus Keyamo,
his counsel, Pinnick maintained: “FIFA is only bound by the
decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sports and does not
entertain or tolerate decisions by local courts in footballing
nations worldwide. FIFA is likely going to wade in by
banning Nigeria from international football.
