NEPA/PHCN has not been sold. The government is still wasting billions in a quest to "fix" it.
Re: Nigerian Electricity Under Construction by debosky(m): 4:00am On Apr 08, 2007
PHCN has not been sold, it has been broken down into ditribution companies, generating companies and a transmission company (Transysco)

expressions of interest are currently being gathered for technical prequalification before bidding shall begin

the only 'sale' is actually the concessioning of Egbin Power station to Korean Power Company, due to the dire situation on ground, but even this hasn't been conculed yet. the newly built Geregu station is also up for grabs under the current program.

when the NIPP is concluded, there should be significant improvement.

I say Nuclear power now!

We need to generate 40,000 mgw if we are to start to compete at all.

You just must know that we must generate electricity up to 150 mgw before we can attract companies like Toyota, Bmw and Mercedees. reason is that the countries where they are now have

1) High Taxes
2) High wage Regimes
3) High environmental requirements.
4) Diminishing Consumers

We have advantage over these countries in this areas

We have to beat them in these areas

1) Cheaper and steady Energy
2) Transparent Judiciary
3) Cheaper Raw Materials

If we can produce Energy in the region of 150,000 MGW and sell it about less the amount it is sold in Europe We will compete for all the big time companies to come to Naija even if all of US Nigerians are armed robbers.
Re: Nigerian Electricity Under Construction by debosky(m): 9:24pm On Apr 08, 2007
those are fallacies - SA generates ~40,000 but BMW, Toyota and others are producing there. In case you are unaware, it will take at least 4 years to build a single nuclear plant, coupled with all the drama over siting, compensation, EIA and other issues, as well as the source of your uranium fuel - which leaves you at the whims of a foreign government.

what cheap raw materials do we have? our iron ore is low quality, and we have no infrastructure to compete with most of these countries.

instead of spending 1.2billion building one plant that can be shut down if some foreign govt dislikes you, the same amount will build 3 gas fired stations where you will produce more energy, not dependent on foreign fuel.

to correct your misconception, there is very little manufacturing left in Europe, the little left there cannot be moved elsewhere for now because the skills are very specialised and cannot be moved easily.

the industrial development issue far exceeds power, many companies are still going to China even when they have to build their own power stations.
Re: Nigerian Electricity Under Construction by GNature(m): 10:01pm On Apr 08, 2007
debosky makes a lot of sense.

According to Kupolokun (NNPC's MD), Nigeria currently has 187 trillion cubit feet of gas reserves - the 10th largest in the world !
Why not use that to generate power rather than subject ourselves to foreign uranium and iaea monitoring ?

Little manufacturing in Europe? You are having a laugh. grin I guess its the shock of losing to the Hammers grinok,so we lost

Solution to our energy needs?Gas,gas and more gas.Its cost effective, abundant and relatively clean.

BMW IS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Go and Check China They are Providing Cheaper Electricity and They have the Market. I am told we have Uranium.

A nuclear power plant (NPP) is a thermal power station in which the heat source is one or more nuclear reactors.

Nuclear power plants are base load stations, which work best when the power output is constant (although boiling water reactors can come down to half power at night). Their units range in power from about 40 MWe to over 1200 MWe. New units under construction in 2005 are typically in the range 600-1200 MWe. The largest nuclear reactors currently in operation are the Tokyo Electric Power Company's 1356 MWe advanced boiling water reactors at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa, Japan, built by Toshiba, Hitachi and General Electric.

As of 2007 the IAEA reported there are 435 nuclear power reactors in operation in the world
[1], operating in 31 different countries
[2]. Together they produce about 17% of the world's electric power.

(According to the above references, the U.S., France, and Japan together account for 49% of all nuclear power plants and 57% of all nuclear generated electricity.)

Yes I agree that we need to make use of Our gas Reserve but we Must Development this very Cheap source of Energy even those Other 9 countries that have gas reserve have alternate power Generation.

I say Nuclear Power Now!

Re: Nigerian Electricity Under Construction by debosky(m): 11:03pm On Apr 08, 2007
Nuclear is not cheap, construction of the plant, the safeguards, and all the other associated issues make it too complex and cumbersome for Nigerian application at the moment.

I have facts on China, many parts are NOT producing electricity, what you have is 'self-generation' where the company decides to supply its own power due to lack of public supply - other infrastructure such as ports, transport system and industrial parks are however in place. I repeat the power issue is not the primary need of companies, granted it attracts certain industries such as aluminium smelters and iron ore producers for whom power is a major cost input, but even those countries who are attracting these kinds of industry (Russia and SA at the moment) use coal and gas for the bulk of their power generation.

I fail to see your desire for nuclear energy for us now, it is expensive, foreign dependent and has extensive lead times before development. Most places that are actively pursuing nuclear are doing so because of a lack of 'conventional' fuels and power sources - we do not have that kind of problems so we need not follow their path now.

From The Site you gave me

"The latest version of our lifetime plans - which detail the commercial operations, decommissioning and clean-up programmes of our 20 sites - show a total cost of £64.8 billion, a net increase of £2.1 billion."

Nobody is the Epitome of technology. Today The Europeans and other Nationals are Leading tomorrow will change for Sure just as it did change when Africans built Pyramids.

Oh well I agree that we have to thread carefully but we need to have Nuclear power So that we don't start Getting lost when it is fully developed.

We are Lucky that we have a leader that wants to have options so that we never lack.

Power stations generating 104,000 MW will probably cost about $60 billion to build. This is is something the Govt can't do by itself. It is extremely neccesary to get the private sector involved
Re: Nigerian Electricity Under Construction by Backslider(m): 12:45pm On Apr 09, 2007
@4play

I agree with on Private sector participation. In fact I think we need for government to play a regulatory role.

You can fuse The Petrol and Energy Generation together.

where you Auction License for the Downstream sector. Sell authority To 10 companies to operate Refineries in ten areas of the countries.
This Companies will be asked to produce Energy Say 1500MGW each You will sell The Crude oil to them at 50% World Crude oil Price.

you are killing bird with 2 stones

But you have to be very Vigilante because this guys can have what you call a gentle man Agreement and team against you. so you have to sanction them.

Nigeria has Uranium deposits, even enough to commercialize

They have been found in states like Taraba, and some other northern states and a few southern states.

@Mckaren

Thanks for your Help. i know we have Uranium 235 and that is why No one wants us to Succeed. We are truly blessed from the North to south It is Just Corruption.

If we have 40% official that are not corrupt we will be better off.

Our Governors are everywhere moving money out they have houses in Ghana even how much in Uk US e.t.c you must know that this is happening in Russia.

No leader will want to Release money when he knows that there is a lot of Corrupt people he has to deal with. I just pray that God send more selfless people to man country.

my Visit to Singapore made me see that if you have a good leadership that is firm the people will follow. Obj is Trying But he must Privatise and with EITI He should make sure that they have a good Transparent body.

We must Succeed I tell you.

There is a Need for us to be Honest even if we have to be Hungry We must be Honest People and One with High Integrity.

I know there are people of High Integrity In Nigeria and they are not heard. WE are Seeing Honest people from all the tribes of the state this is Making feel more Nigerian I tell you.

some people are not ready to give you a breathing space if you are a Nigerian. I have been embarrassed because of my Nationality in my Journeys by people. Some want to come home and be happy and die in Nigeria.

We need Continuation in leadership so that you will wear out the terrible effect of years of corruption.

We will Succeed.

Good Bless Naija.
Re: Nigerian Electricity Under Construction by debosky(m): 7:57pm On Apr 09, 2007
Nuclear power is not the solution, all this fear of us 'catching up later' is unfounded - if we utilise our hydro and fossil fuel power sources, we will be self sufficient in electricity. When I say wait 20-30 years, its not because I want us to be 'behind' its our of a realization that we should develop what is in the country before getting dependent on the outside world. Even if we have Uranium, we do not possess the technology required for enrichment and production of fuel rods, which will still make us dependent on the outside suppliers who can decide to shut off at any moment.

the issue of selling oil at 50% int'l prices to refiners will not work, since at that rate petrol produced in Nigeria will be cheaper than that in neighbouring countries, it will all be smuggled and diverted out. Let the market run itself, remove most if not all govt involvement in that and we'll see improvements.

grandiose projects are not needed, use the simple and widespread technology currently available and then you can talk of nuclear and co later.

We need good leadership, that is not in doubt -people who will do what is needed now, not some hare brained scheme that might do more harm than good.
Re: Nigerian Electricity Under Construction by Backslider(m): 8:30pm On Apr 09, 2007
@Debosky

ok lets leave the NUCLEAR Energy we all agree that we need NUCLEAR ENERGY but the issue is time.

The 50% issue will help Naija because we will sell cheaper fuel. Most countries in west Africa will come and buy from us The demand from African countries surrounding will increased more and more and this will give us more Jobs

Refineries That will be built
Moving the Gasoline in tankers
The By Products
This is Opportunity for Exporting Finished Product and Cash earned from Taxes

The needs of Refined Gasoline In west Africa is in the tens of Billions of Dollars

We have to position our self strategically.

If we have Crude oil Refinery Like 20 and we are selling to all Africa we will collapse the structures and they will not to able to compete with us

We would be refining Crude oil for these countries because the cost to refine oil would be very Cheap in Nigeria.

Allow more refineries to come in to naija and sell the Crude to them very Cheap. THE TARGET IS TO MEET THE DEMAND OF THE WEST AFRICAN MARKET.

IN GHANA A GALLON OF PETROL IS about 480 naira infact it was told me that it is Cheaper here. THE ADVANTAGE WE HAVE WE MUST USE IT.

An example Global com is in Ghana they are here because of Competition. You have to set up Naija based companies that can move out Like Texaco did in the USA.

More Refineries needs to be Built and you must Supply the Crude oil to them at a lower cost so that you can compete. Already you will be making money in selling the License to operate A refinery. and you will task them to produce 1000Mgw with the agreement that you will give them Crude oil at low Price.

We have to break the Jinx the companies must come but they must be regulated also.
Re: Nigerian Electricity Under Construction by debosky(m): 8:41pm On Apr 09, 2007
I don't think subsidizing crude oil to the refiners is the key, if you do that, they may claim their refineries are broken down, and export the crude oil and make a clean 100% profit on you, since its much easier to simply sell the crude than to build new refineries. these kinds of subsidies will breed inefficiency and even more corruption within the system. I believe the current system of tying oil block allocation to power projects is a good strategy, but putting subsidies have not worked - that is part of the reason why the refineries have not worked properly till now. if the refiners can be allowed to recoup their profits, while the govt decides to subsidize, then maybe we will have some progress.

refinery licenses have been given out, over 17 of them, but not one refinery is on the ground, the issue is more of pricing/regulated pricing more than the crude oil price. an integrated oil company producing its own crude and refining it would make sense since producing oil is cheap (~$13 ) and refining it yourself, as long as you are sure you will get a fair price for your product, will be a good business venture.

Thanks for the Education hope these companies start work soon.

In democracy things are slower and I hope you can tell people in Nigeria that the Development will come surely but slowly. We are still a new Democracy and I can now appreciate why when Nigerians first come into Ghana are very Over active.

The Adrenalin in them is high because of The Expectation and The Hustle and Bustle.
Re: Nigerian Electricity Under Construction by Ka: 9:52pm On Apr 09, 2007
Check this article out - it sets out how the new electricity regime should work:

http://www.nigeriavillagesquare.com/articles/shokos-mixed-bag/nigerias-electric-power-sector-reform-matters-ar.html

Certainly, there needs to be privatisation, but it isn't as straightforward as it looks. The big problem is that unlike telecom companies that can build their own infrastructure so that they aren't dependent on each other, the various electricity companies will need to share infrastructure. The most important company of all will be the transmission company managing the national grid - if this doesn't do its job well, then it doesn't matter how much electricity the power gen companies generate.

I think it'll take at least four-five years for things to be settled, and even then, you can probably only expect rationed regular power, not 24hrs a day power. But at least, that's still better than the present regime. smiley
Re: Nigerian Electricity Under Construction by Seun(m): 9:56pm On Apr 09, 2007
Nigeria is very big, so a different transmission company can't handle each town or community or street in Nigeria.
Re: Nigerian Electricity Under Construction by debosky(m): 10:11pm On Apr 09, 2007
a single distribution company cannot handle the each town or community in Nigeria, but a single regulated but privately run Transmission Vehicle is desirable, that is what is being proposed under current privatization plans. generation and distribution will be fully privatized, but for power evacuation from generation sources to distribution centers, the transmission firm can handle that.

The 18 Operations from PHCN are as follows:
Power Generation -6
1.Shiroro Hydro 2. Kainji Hydro Electric
3.Sapele Power 4. Egbin Power
5.Afam Power 6. Ughelli Power

Electricity Distribution -11
7.Abuja Electricity Dist. 8. Jos Electricity Distribution
9.Ibadan Electricity Dist. 10. Benin Electricity Dist.
11. Enugu Electricity Dist. 12. Kaduna Electricity Dist.
13. Kano Electricity Dist. 14. Eko Electricity Dist.
15. Ikeja Electricity Dist. 16. P/Harcourt Electricity Dist.
17.Yola Electricity Dist.

18.Transmission Company of Nigeria –1
-will provide open access to the grid
-transparent non-discriminatory pricing
-remain a national asset but under private management

those are the current proposals

I am very Humbled by your submissions. I am schooled by you. I think this is also better. With what i have read there will be a lot of Jobs in Nigeria just in the power energy alone. We must provide mortgaging facilities for the about one million people that this industry will provide jobs.

I thank God that our technocrats are working.

But Note that The other Guys will not be sitting down for you to succeed, local agents will be used to sabotage. You will have bad publicity by your friends and foes.

This is a good development except that my fear remains how factual is this, what is the concrete evidence to butress this, this is not the first time we ever heard about such effort on the pages of newspapers with nothing on ground to show for it, In this country, power project has become an accepted avenue to loot the national treasury. God save us! Ghana got right, Now even Togo!! Why can do same?
