In those days, if you own an HTC smartphone, you’re a big boy. Unfortunately that’s no longer the case. HTC as a company has a history full of ups and downs but it is important to note that most of the technological advancements we’re seeing in today’s smartphones actually started with HTC. According to reports, their sales in the month of June dropped by 68 percent. It has already announce that it will sack 1500 workers few days ago. Looking at all these misfortunes, it would be difficult to know that this company once had excellent record and at one time was doing better than Samsung and Apple. Let’s look at these facts.

1. The meaning of HTC is ‘High Tech Computer’ and it shares almost the same name with one of it’s founders HT Cho.



2. The company was founded in 1997 by HT Cho, Peter Chou and Cher Wang in Taiwan.



3. It was actually the woman, Cher Wang who brought the capital for the company. At the time her father was one of the richest men in Taiwan. She is one of the richest people in Taiwan, Forbes named her the 54th most powerful women in the world 2014. She is currently the CEO of HTC and also a Christian.



4. In 2002, HTC made the first ever Microsoft Windows Mobile smartphone the HTC. It had 2.2 inch display, 65k colors, a 132 MHz TI OMAP processor, 16MB of RAM, 32MB of internal memory, SD card support, and a 1,000 mAh battery.



5. HTC collaborated with Google to gave birth to the first ever Android smartphone, the legendary HTC Dream in 2008. It had, 3.2 inch display, Android 1.6 (donut) OS, 256 MB of internal storage, 192 MB RAM, 3.5 MP camera and Removable Li-Ion 1150 mAh battery. This is the ancestor of all Android devices.



6. HTC also released the first ever, 3G windows mobile phone the, MTeoR in 2006. It had 2.2 inch display, 64MB RAM, 1.3MP camera and 1190mAh battery



7. In 2010, HTC launched the first ever 4G smartphone, HTC Evo 4G. It was also the first 4G phone to hit the United States. It had 1GB RAM, 8MP Camera, 4.7inch HD display and 2000mAh battery capacity.



8. HTC is the first smartphone maker in the world to release a dual-camera phone. The HTC One M8. It was released in 2014, years ahead of Samsung and LG. Today almost every smartphone maker has a dual camera phone. It had dual 4MP camera, 5 inch HD display, 2GB RAM and 2600mAh battery.




9. The HTC One M7 is the first Android smartphone in the world with Full Metal Body. Today almost every smartphone maker now has a phone with metal body including Chinese smartphone makers.



10. HTC and Apple have accused each other many times of copying each other’s designs. The HTC one A9 almost looks identical to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S. This is one of the biggest copycat design in modern history.




11. It was HTC who was first company to unleash a smartphone with transparent back HTC U11 plus, a feature Xiaomi later copied with the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer edition.



12. In 2010 HTC was ranked one of the most innovative companies ahead of Microsoft and Samsung.

13. In 2011, HTC was the biggest smartphone maker in the U.S., capturing almost a quarter of the market. It shipped around 5.7 million devices in the period, 800,000 more than Samsung in second place. Apple came in third with sales of 4.6 million units.

14. HTC delivered one of the all-time best designed phones in history: the HTC One (M7). The design still command great respect even till today.



15. In 2011, It was one of the top 4 smartphone companies in the world alongside, Motorola Samsung and Apple.



The last few years haven’t been kind for HTC, a company that was poised for success when they launched the very first Android powered smartphone. Samsung is now dominating the Android smartphone industry and the Chinese manufacturers have added more sorrow to HTC by churning out great, cheaper Android phones. With the way things are going, HTC might soon be annihilated from the smartphone world. HTC has a great legacy, but nothing last forever especially in the world of tech, look at Nokia for example.

Nokia is recovering now, there was a time they were exactly where HTC is now.

HTC can come back, they just need to make the right decisions.
