Former President Olusegun Obsanjo has accused the government of President Muhammadu Buhari of intimidating judges to do the bidding of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on election matters.

Obasanjo, who has been critical of Buhari lately, also alleged that anti-graft agencies were being used to clamp down on the opposition.

He spoke in Abuja during at a colloquium to mark the 70th birthday of Josephine Anenih, former minister for women affairs and social development.

“Some institutions created for normal administration and dispensation of Justice, like the EFCC, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the ministry of justice are being directed to witch-hunt and pursue political opponents,” he said.

“The use of intimidation, violence and physical attacks have started in some states. It is understood that judges are already being intimidated so as to prepare them to do the ruling party’s bidding in election petitions. All there are visible in today’s practice of democracy in Nigeria.”

Although, the former president did not mention those whose voices are being suppressed, he maintained that democracy allows for the opposition to be heard as it is a government of the people by the people.

“For me, that after almost 20 years of the beginning of the present dispensation, it has not been derailed, is enough a development in progress, even though there are many unpalatable practises and dangerous signs that have shown their ugly heads, which is the strongest indication that our democracy is alive but, it cannot be said to be hale and hearty. Practitioners of democracy must be democrats, if you have a lot to be desired,” he said.

Touching on women’s involvement in governance, Obasanjo said Buhari’s government is yet to meet the 35 affirmative action.

He also called for an amendment of the 1999 constitution to include 40 percent slots for women in government.

“In this present administration, there are 15 women members in the house of representatives. It is not only unacceptable but makes mockery of gender balance. There must be amendment of our constitution, not to allow any gender to have less than 40 percent in any parliament,” he said.

“The health of our democracy can be judged by the participation of women. Democracy is a system of government that allows team spirit and debate before decisions are reached; it is a government for all citizens to benefit without fear or favour.”

We need help from the international community and only Donald Trump can help us.

Buhari will not leave next year, that’s for sure, unless he’s forced out.

Always posting rubbish and liking same with your other monikers. Is this what they taught in Islamic school, to write incoherently with wrong punctuations and wrong paragraphings?

We know Buhari won't concede defeat....Immediately after 2019 election, Buhari would be jailed.
I don't see a Buhari willingly relinquishing power....But he must leave in 2019.....either is immediately jailed or he is eliminated...

It is easy to make up stories, but very difficult to bring out evidence especially when the stories are just made up. OBJ being the past president has the right to bring out evidence to back up any of his stories but here is making false accusations against the ruling part because if his personal vendetta with PMB. Who and when was the judges intimidated. When someone feel threatened, they sometimes go to the extreme to blackmail and lie against their for to paint themselves good and get their goals. This is what's happening her now

WHY DEPLOY 30,000 POLICEMEN TO EKITI - SENATE

source:https://www.infonewsnigeria.com/discussion/1559/why-deploy-30-000-policemen-to-ekiti-senate#latest

The Senate has questioned the number of policemen deployed to the forthcoming Ekiti Governorship election slated to hold on Saturday.

During plenary on Tuesday, Deputy Majority Leader, Bala Ibn Na’allah, said that “It is not acceptable for public funds to be used to deploy 30,000 policemen for the Ekiti election while the government could not moblise 10,000 policemen to stop the killings in Plateau and Zamfara states.

The bill outlines the roles and duties of the police hierarchy to avoid role conflict and introduces a responsibility clause to make the police more effective, The bill seeks to establish a community police forum and boards in all the states to ensure effective and participatory community policing, The bill provides for the bail of persons arrested without a warrant to the effect that such persons shall not be kept in police detention for more than 24 hours without being charged to court.

The move comes amid several calls by Nigerians asking the government to look in the nation’s security system, including the police to enable the lives of Nigerians are rightfully protected and stop the brutality and extrajudicial killings melted on innocent ones. Recently on July 4, 2018, a policeman shot and killed a serving NYSC member, Linda Igwetu in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The conversation in the country in the last few days has been on the establishment of state and community police to address some of the security challenges confronting the country.

In the event the constitution is amended to allow for the creation of state police, reforming the Nigeria police is still necessary as not all state governments may agree to have state police. The Deputy Majority Leader is, therefore, calling for an urgent need to reform the Nigerian Police.
