India is set to become one of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturing company as premium android smartphone giant Samsung opens the world’s largest manufacturing factory in Noida India. The ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi and the South Korean President, Moon Jae-in few days ago. The factory is going to be the world’s biggest, with a production capacity of up to 120 million phones annually. Noida is just one hour drive from New Delhi.

Built on 32 acres of land next to Samsung’s original factory in India, the plant will allow the South Korean firm to nearly double the number of smartphones it makes in India every year from 68 million to 120 million. The plant is going to need a massive workforce of 70,000 workers so that it 70,000 new jobs to be created by the South Koreans in India. Samsung used to be the highest smartphone seller in India but was overthrown by Chinese giant Xiaomi 6 months ago.

With a population of 1.3 billion people, India’s smartphone market is almost as big as China’s market and Indian government is doing everything within it’s power to attract more investors to India. It is worthy to note that Apple has also agreed start production of the iPhone 6 locally in India. This development will not only create jobs in India, it will also allow Samsung to make phones at a lower cost and sell them cheaper in India. Samsung says it’ll use the plant to make entry-level phones that sell for less than $100, as well as flagship devices like the Galaxy S9.

India imposed a customs fee of 20 percent on imported gadgets coming into the country which has prompted differtnt companies setting up manufacturing plants in India . Companies like Samsung and Xiaomi, which build their Indian-market phones in India, will be less affected. Even Apple, which competes exclusively at the high end of the market, has started to build phones in India.

Was this triggered by jealousy? Of recent I heard Gionee beats all smartphone product to emerged as the best smartphone in India. Now samsung largest factory is now in India. Let's see if they can give gionee a run for their device.

Nigeria is a huge market for these smartphone manufacturers. But our supply chain to other parts of Africa and legal structure for foreign investments is still unattractive.

We have the workforce, land mass, access to Chinese imports for components and the demand conditions are favourable. The African Continental free trade may improve supply chain value. If we increase tariffs for importing these goods - we may likely strong arm to manufacture it here - rather than rely on imports.

India has the second highest population in the world after China so their smartphone market is very large. It makes sense that most phone companies are establishing their companies in India.
