F0RTRAN: The Senator representing Ebonyi North senatorial district, Sam Egwu has described the condition of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, as the most embarrassing among its peers in the world.
In a debate on the airport which was sponsored by Senator Chukwuka Utazi on Thursday, Egwu lamented that the airport which serves the people of the South East, South-South and North-Central has been left in a dangerously dilapidated condition.
He explained that the Ethiopian Airlines, an international air outfit which uses the airport, have often complained of dilapidated runways which they have appealed to the authority for repairs.
Enyinnaya Abaribe representing Abia Central senatorial district, called for investigation of the contractor that handled former repairs works on the airport, stating that it was unlikely that repairs were carried out during the last administration.
Senate Deputy Leader, Bala Ibn Na’allah posited that the Enugu Airport was technically unsafe for landing. He explained that any airport which has a bad runway could damage the engine of an aircraft.
“When you say an airport is technically unsafe, it takes into account demonstrated capacity of the runways,” he said.
Barnabas Gemade representing Benue Southwest, on his part, said it was late to include the airport in the budget, noting that Senator Chukwuka Utazi ought to have brought up the issue prior to the planning of the budget. He however called for supplementary budget in that regard.
Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu revealed that Ethiopian aircraft lost tyres on two occasions while landing at the airport, and they stopped their operations there.
He added that other international airlines were not forthcoming despite its international status due to the condition of the airport.
The Senate then adopted the resolution, calling on the federal government to resurface and reconstruct the runway of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

ENUGU—Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu stakeholders have commended the former Minister of Aviation, now representing Anambra North Senatorial zone, Senator Stella Oduah for implementing Federal Government’s good intention to make Enugu an international airport.
Oduah midwived the building of the terminal at the airport and designated Ethiopian Airlines to operate there. The stench of contractual fraud left behind by Senator Stella Oduah during her tenure as Minister of Aviation remains unceasing. Oduah, whose time as a minister under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan was headlined by the dodgy contract of two bullet-proof BMW cars for her use, was elected senator in the last general elections.
The latest installment of controversy of her legacy as a minister is coming from the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, which was closed down for over two years to allow for its upgrade into a real international airport. To this end, a contract was awarded at the cost of N86billion.
The airport runway, built in the 70s, stretches over a distance of 2.6km , which was to be extended to 3.6km to meet the global international runway standards. The old 2.6km runway was pot-hole ridden, making it risky for landing.
Palliative measures were occasionally carried out on the runway at night to arrest further deterioration of the runway, but they did not eliminate the risk.
The contractor’s brief was to scrape off the original 2.6km runway that and construct an entirely new one. However, what was done the dressing of its surface and the addition of a new one-kilometer stretch to make it 3.6km. But even the new one was shoddily built, making it unable to meet the standard specifications for runway construction.
Sources revealed to this medium that no soil analysis was conducted before construction. This has been blamed for the regular flooding when the rains come.
Being the only one runway at the airport, not more than one plane can land or take off at the same time. The runway, as it is, cannot accommodate bigger planes like Boeing 747 and 777, a situation that makes the airport less than a lucrative destination for airlines. The airport is made more unappealing regarding profit by the absence of cargo warehouse facilities.
And currently, despite the vast amounts expended, there is no perimeter fencing around the runway. A case of a loiterer blocking a plane from taking off was reported late last year. Also, the airport does not have instrument landing systems, ILS
It has an improvised solar lighting on the runway; the airport authorities said works for between two to three hours daily. Ideally, it should work all day. Similarly unavailable are CCTV cameras. The shuttle bus service for passengers has been discontinued by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAAN). As a result, passengers are left to trek to the aircraft even when it is raining.
The decrepit situation at the airport has led to the decision of Lufthansa and Emirates airlines to defer the commencement of their ope rations on that route. Moreover, the runway represents a clear and present danger to flight safety. Former Aviation minister, Princess Stella Oduah has been called out by critics over the condition of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport. Why are they so afraid of Princess Stella Oduah remaining in your cabinet? It’s quite obvious now to discerning observers of Nigerian politics that there is a clear method to the present orchestrated madness unleashed on the Aviation Minister. My own question is very simple. Who is the God-forsaken contractor that carried out that substandard job on the runway? He needs to be flogged and thrown in jail, for a very long time!
FAAN completes repairs of Enugu Airport runway | 22 January 2018 | 2:12 pm | The Guardian Newspapers |
The repair of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, runway has been completed, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) said in Lagos on Monday.
Mrs Herrienta Yakubu, the General Manager, Corporate Affairs, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the runway is now open for full operations following its completion.
She said FAAN’s team of engineers led by the Managing Director, Mr Saleh Dunoma, inspected the project and certified it as meeting the required standards.
Yakubu apologised to travellers and other stakeholders for the inconveniences caused by the partial closure of the runway, to pave way for its rehabilitation.
NAN reports that the first phase of the repairs was executed from Dec. 14 to Dec. 21, 2017 while the second phase started from Dec. 27, 2017 to Jan. 4.
During the period, the airport was open for operation only between 7.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. to enable the contractor to use the working hours to do the job to ensure a “stable and even surface” of the runway.
The project was, however, delayed for a few days before the runway was finally opened for full flight operations. https://guardian.ng/business-services/aviation-business/faan-completes-repairs-of-enugu-airport-runway/
