Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo has said stronger leadership was critical for the economic development of the African continent.

Obasanjo said this on Friday at the ongoing 2018 Afreximbank Annual Meeting in Abuja

He said Africa had the human, mineral and capital resources, as well as strong institutions to become a “heaven on earth,” yet it wasn’t living up to its potential due to weak leadership

He said, “We are not where we should be, but we have moved away from where we where.

“It is obvious from what we have started to see with the signing of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

“The signing of the AfCFTA is historic and it shows that at last Africans are beginning to work together.

“The talk of establishing the AfCFTA has been there since the African Union was established. Imagine how long it took for it to become a reality.”

“I remember what happened in Kigali, a day before the signing, we were not sure if 20 countries will sign, so it was a surprise when 44 countries signed that day,” he said.

Obasanjo urged African leaders to collaborate more and emulate countries that were doing well and also learn not to make the same mistakes that had already been made by others.

He pointed out that the African population was rising at an astronomical rate, therefore it was imperative to ensure that the right policies were in place to improve the economy and create jobs.

He cited the telecommunications sector in Nigeria as a success story of how Africans were the architect of their own future. The former President used the opportunity to encourage more women to go into politics.

He urged women to vie for gubernatorial and senatorial seats in the coming elections in Nigeria.

Nigeria will never forget OBJ,

In Gen Murtala Mohammed era, those in schools then were being fed, sheltered and clothed by the government, the only thing the government couldn't do for you was read and pass exams for you but when OBJ took over, all those government favours to the people had to be borne by parents, OBJ diverted the Operation Feed the Nation funds to Ota Farm, OBJ was always behind Yar Adua senior in diverting Nigeria wealth gotten from the South South and South West to the poor North, OBJ was among those who made sure MKO Abiola wouldn't exercise his mandate as the President in the June 12 election, OBJ held meeting with the Yoruba AD party leaders in 2003 asking them to vote for him that in return, he would make sure they retained their positions as the ruling parties but turned his back at them when he won, OBJ extorted Nigerians with the Telecommunications and their exorbitant tariffs which would be his pocket gain but Yar Adua and Jonathan years saved us, OBJ pocketed $16b funds meant to increase the amount of power in Nigeria, OBJ from the year he has taken over the government has had all Ota farm staff on Nigerian Federal government payroll until it was stopped by Buhari in 2016, among reasons why he's not been supportive of Buhari, OBJ has never set a good legacy for his successors be it during his military or civilian reign, everything good he does has never been for Nigeria if you have the true information about it, OBJ is a villian and should be in the same history book with military rulers like Gen Sanni Abacha, Gen Ibrahim Babangida and likes.
