We need to rethink our rehabilitation centers in Nigeria. Prison centers shouldn't be only to punish but to re-intergrate back into the community.

Data has shown treating prisoners better, will lead to fallen crimes as Norway has shown, even more less people becoming outcast enough to re-enter the criminal world .

Here is a list of prisons around the world and how different they are from the Nigerian prison system.

.1 Norway
Halden Prison is a maximum-security prison in Halden, Norway. It has three main units and receives prisoners from all over the world, but has no conventional security devices. The second-largest prison in Norway, it was established in 2010 with a focus on rehabilitation; its design simulates life outside the prison. Among other activities, sports and music are available to the prisoners, who interact with the unarmed staffs

3. Switzerland
Opened in 1977, the main function of Geneva’s Champ-Dollon prison is to hold prisoners before trial and sentencing. The numbers of inmates is constantly increasing, which has lead to a chronic problem of overcrowding. 115 different nationalities were represented in the prison in 2010 with just 7.2% Swiss.

The key word is rehabilitation and not retributive. It is the way to go!

5. New Zealand

The Otago Corrections Facility in New Zealand looks more like a teenager's bedroom than a prison. There are health facilities and a library designed to keep people feeling like members of society.

.9 Malawi

The Maula prison in Lilongwe, Malawi, is severely overcrowded — in 2015, almost 200 people were crammed into one 60-person cell. Prisoners there, many of whom are Ethiopian migrants, must share one toilet per 120 people and one tap per 900 people. Prisoners are fed just once a day, due to the small budget of the Malawian government

.10 El Salvador

These cells are just 12 feet wide and 15 feet tall, but they're usually packed with more than 30 people. They were initially constructed to serve as 72-hour holding cells, but many inmates stay for more than a year. Most of their days are spent pulling apart their clothes and using the thread to sew together hammocks, where they sleep stacked on top of one another like cords of wood.

Not surprising that the majority of the beautiful prisons in your list, are from countries with very low crime rate. Norway, Switzerland, Germany and Japan made the list of countries with low crime rate.

Some of these countries have significantly small population. So, it is safe to say population is a factor.

Norway has such low crime rate, its increase can even be attributed to influx of diverse migrants. Yes, Nigerian prisons should be for rehabilitation, but I won't really blame our high crime rate on that. I think it has to do with us as a people, we fail in establishing good ethics right from the smallest unit [family] and spread this into the whole country and planet grin.

The top 8 prisons you listed should not be in Nigeria otherwise people will commit more crime in other to be there because surely those prisons look extremely livable than where many people outside the prisons live.

Japan doesn't have small population okay. Those countries as you highlighted are way developed countries & on the other hand; population is not a yard stick used to judge why a country shouldn't have improved facilities in place for rehabilitation of defaulters of the LAW.

Your country Ngeria doesn't just WORK simple!

You obviously skipped the "some" for reasons best known to you.

SOME of the countries listed as countries with low crime rate have small population. So, it is safe to say low population is a significant factor in their reduced crime rate.

Amakavula - You must post pictures of Nigerian prisons, to make this torry complete.......

Some of you might have been, hence have a visual recollection...

Some of us have never been and would like to have an idea. So we can remain on the straight and narrow road....

African and South American prisons are the same. It seems South American ones are even worse than our own. Being locked up in South America is more than hell.
