"I feel bittered ,What a nonsense of Nnamdi Azikiwe university clinic in Awka, a final year student, a course mate, just to share memories together was rushed to the nonsense, rubbish clinic on emergency, on getting to the hospital no single doctor was there to attend to him, the nurses looking like cleaners couldn't even attend to him, Francis was right before us dying!professionals in the medical field told us to pray without them playing their own part, I was gutted , although we were praying heavily , we tried to rush Francis to another hospital a doctor rushed in stupidly asking the hospital she is working in if they had oxygen and Bp apparatus, the nurses said no, Francis was going far out of this world right in our very before ,that was when it occurred to them that Francis would be rushed to the hospital , I was inside the ambulance holding Francis foot, it was damn cold, his eyes were already open!!! I was scared , I knew only miracle could happen because Francis had no impulse, on getting to Amaku general hospital the doctors saw it was already late, Francis had no life in him again, they left him unattended , we felt it has happened already , as his course mates we were optimistic a miracle could happen, Francis was gone, our lecturer came and broke the news to us in the hospital , we cried , we are still crying, we are feeling bitter , the dean of students affair came to show his stupidity, he said "THIS IS NIGERIA, WE DON'T EXPECT THINGS TO BE PERFECT, WE DON'T HAVE IMPLEMENTS, this words got us pissed ,he was then blaming our leaders, A DEAN OF STUDENTS AFFAIR, A LEADER,

Even though it's good to exercise and keep fit,we need to consult the doctor to check the condition of our heart and also the blood pressure before starting any exercise. Sometimes one can just slump and die while jogging without without knowing they were hypertensive or had heart disease. May God console his loved ones.

Why can't ordinary University clinic be fixed? We know things like this are bound to happen in an institution. With over 20,000 students you don't have facilities to attend to emergency? It's weakening. Spits on our government.

Exactly this "hand to mouth" nonsense is what has led to many deaths.

Its very pathetic that the Nigerian entity do so little in trying to save life but will walk the wire in trying to make money.

Nigerians like putting emphasis on FINAL YEAR whenever something bad happens to anyone in final year. Being in final year doesn't make anyone above death or any kind of mishap. Makes it sound like being in final year and failing to complete it means failure to go to heaven.

They really think having a degree is making heaven. Meanwhile degrees flying around with no skill is the biggest problem of the country.

Sudden cardiac death probably due to an underlying cardiac issue. So sad....a young man like this. The emphasis here however should be on prevention cos once it occurs.....the level of specialist medical care needed is scarce in the country. You would need a good cardiologist and cardiac center if any hope is to be achieved of resuscitation. Just because you see an hospital doesn't mean the have the level of expert care for all medical conditions ..... especially in a university setting....they usually are not meant to deal with complex medical issues. Also time is of the utmost importance whenever heart conditions strike we are talking about rapid care less than 30 mins for best results.....I suggest a physical medical check up for everyone as it can tell us the true state of our health.....

An hospital that cannot even give a 1st aid is that 1 an hospital.

You guys are ignorant and aren't taking a lot of factors into consideration. Who says you must be puffed up twice the size of Ambode before you get a heart attack? You can be as slim as Obama and still have atherosclerosis. As long as you eat and leave a relatively sedentary life, you can build up atheromatous plaque in the lining of your artery. So looking fit is not a good indication.

Other footballers and athletes slumped? Yes if they were not watching their diet. If your sport involves great physical activities and you eat oily and fatty foods, you could slump. That's why top athletes, like Ronaldo, have chefs that regulate their diet.

He was playing basketball? And so what? Is it implied that he was a frequent basketball player? Is it implied that he visited the gym regular? Perhaps his friends might have said "join us this once and play basketball" and he went not knowing basket ball involves some intense activity. Haven't you seen governors play ball even though they are at risk of heart attack with their pot bellies? Does playing ball that once mean they were fit? Of course not.

We need a fitness culture in Nigeria. People focus too much on money and when you are growing fat people say that you are enjoying.

Your message is important, albeit may not be applicable in this case.
The guy in question is obviously not fat, he is young, and fit and was in the middle of a sport playing basketball abi na football when he slumped.
Unfortunately, many young people have underlying cardiovascular problems without knowing, and playing a very active sport atimes can trigger it.
We have several cases of young fit professional footballers slumping on the ground suddenly and dying. I think it's only one case i can actively remember CPR worked for.
Every young person involvdd in sports need to have regular medical checks. I have seen a young boy 23 year old who came to the clinic because his watch/activity monitor kept showing he had a very low pulse. When he was checked in hospital, his pulse was 39/minute. He was fitted with a cardiac pacemaker within a week or so. His heart could have stopped any minute- complete heart block.
If not that he was vigilant and picked it up himself, he could have died out of the blues, just like that.
It's sad the state of our hospitals in Nigeria. Emergency services seem to be zero. It's not enough to have just any staff on ground, but we need emergency specialists in an emergency room.
Every person whether regular person in the streets or in the hospital should know what CPR is all about. It's not rocket science, and doesn't necessarily need special skills. Basic life support courses should be attended by everyone, it's a life skill that can come in handy at anytime. The earlier cpr is started, the higher 4he chances of it succeeding.

Heart attack is a brutal killer...once it strikes, if 1st aid (CPR) is not administered within 5 mins, it will be a miracle to save d victim...reason why First Aid (especially CPR) should be added to our curriculum at all levels of education...as u don't know when it will come in handy...a good 1st aid could have saved that young man's life.
