A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is not currently required for entry into professional nursing in all countries. In the US, there has been an effort for it to become the entry level degree since 1964, when the American Nurses Association (ANA) advanced the position that the minimum preparation for beginning professional nursing practice should be a baccalaureate degree education in nursing.[4] The Institute of Medicine (IOM) affirmed in 2010 that nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression.[5

And Nigerian BSC graduates wants it as entry level for selfish interest definitely. BSC nurse doesn't stop u from being a nurse and doesn't stop u from carrying out a physicians order.

It is important that every profession have a progression to their zenith though. The theoretical details for BSC nurses is definitely tougher, and takes nursing from a bedside job to a research based course, where new innovation and protocols can be instituted empirically. That's the reason for the BSC.

However, it would be wrong for a Medical officer with a PHD in anatomy to be seeking for more pay in the hospital, because it doesn't add anything to patient care. He can also decide to lecture anatomy part-time or go into Anatomic based research. Also, a BSC nurse who went further to have a PHD in Nursing Education has not business asking for more pay or role in the hospital, it doesn't add anything to patient care, though she can go into research and propound theories. Now dragging for equal pay with a physician, with a non clinically inclined masters or phd is the ridiculous aspect. That's what is happening in Nigeria, and that's what I am against.
Just imagine what you are typing mr biggy ! So, you don't think or don't know that those years of research by the PhD nurse would add so much values to his/her practice in the hospitals ??
Why don't we then start training medical doctors at diploma levels instead of having them go through the universities Since you have established that diploma holders do better in practice than university degree holders ?? What is sauce for the goose should be sauce for the gander, remember ?? Or is your opinion yet another biased one just to keep other healthcare professionals down trodden

Being a Medical Doctor anywhere in the world requires minimum of a bachelor. Being a nurse anywhere in the world doesn't require the same. It's world standard and not sentiments.

Being a medical doctor requires a bachelor and there's a reason for that. That same reason is why a BNSc graduate is a better nurse than a diploma in nursing holder. The two should never be on the same level.

I agree with u, I never said they are on the same level. Read my comments without bias. It is the BSC nurses clamouring for scraping of diploma that are biased.

What is your problem here really?
More than 60 years ago graduates of medicine are awarded licensure in medicine at Yabatech, not even a certificate, diploma, or degree. But they were able to move forward to double degrees of MBBS while you want nursing to remain the same 2 centuries after? Were they not called doctors after graduation from Yabatech? Nurse practitioners and prescribers is already a threat to doctors in advanced countries. And Nigerians turn is here
All I can see is that you feel threatened by the new crop of degrees and professional independence springing up here and there. Better brace up cos more is coming.

Stop buying the lies ur elders tell u pls. It is mere greed and bias to call for scrapping of diploma in nursing. These nurses write the same council exams with u BSC nurses, and many times pass a 100%, while the so called BSC nurses mess up.

The first set of graduated Doctors in Nigeria were accredited by the British, as there was no MDCN then. They couldn't go past 1st MBBS, and had to be flown abroad to complete their studies. So plss always give verified information. U could as well check up the first set of medical Doctors in Nigeria urself, before passing these unverified information.

Also check up if lower degrees in Nursing has been scrapped in Ghana, South Africa, UK or America, before clamouring for a scrap in Nigeria. The information age bring all these details to those who seek for them.

Take care lady.

Afterthought: The first set of accredited and Licensed Doctors in Nigeria were awarded MBBS. Today, Doctors are not clamouring for a change of nomenclature. Rather it is courses allied to Medicine that are constantly crying for name change, very recently Bachelor of nursing,Bachelor of Midwifery (NBBM) by graduate nurses. But how pathetic.

Bigiman, I am done replying you....
NB, nursing and midwifery is not allied to medicine and has never been.
Please try hard and fast to establish courses that are allied to medicine. Google is your friend. .
