This should be resisted. Google and Facebook tried this sort of free internet gimmick in India and thier government wisely shut it down.

They will prioritize Google data and slow down all other sites. This goes against the idea of net neutrality.
bro Nigeria and India are not the same.

let them leave it for us.

Why will it not be the 36 states but only those states mentioned that will enjoy this?
ln this Buhari administration, partiality is the ORDER of the day.

Those are the most populated.

It is practical to go those places for it to have maximum effect.

They already have access to your information except you don't have a Gmail account or uses an Android device. They don't need to provide free internet before accessing it.

This is wonderful news.

Where MTN and other telcos are busy planning on how to increase the price of data, Google is here about to give free data. I know business is about making profit, but when you think about profit too much you forget about the people who even help you make profit.

It's always wise to give them. Thanks for this, Google. smiley

Google Nigeria has announced plans to reach more than 10 million Nigerians with free Internet access in five cities.

According to the global content provider, the Wi-Fi will be available in 200 Google stations in Lagos, Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Ibadan and Abuja by 2019.

This was made known on Thursday at the second Google for Nigeria event in Lagos, where the company announced updates on its Go products suites such as Google Go, YouTube Go, Google Maps Go and Android Go.

Speaking at the unveiling of the Google stations, the Google Nigeria Country Director, Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor, said the initiative would address affordability and access to data as well as broadband penetration.

She stated that the free Wi-Fi was rolled out in partnership with an Internet Service Provider with extensive fibre network, 21st Century, adding that the company was open to partnerships with other ISPs and telcos.

How I wish that Nigerians and Africans understand that these freebies are not development.

Only Africans can develop Africa through handwork and dedication.

Development can mean so many thing... but this is still a good initiative from google. For instance Whatsapp is a freebie but i assure you many Nigerians are conducting transactions running into millions on a daily basis via the platform of Whatsapps.

Africa can only develop through massive embrace of technology, the problem of Africa right now is we want to keep reinventing the wheel.

Do you know that this "gift" will rather stiffle our own growth? What if our government enabled us to learn to fully develop and maintain our own internet and app services that will in the future compete with Google and them whatsapp? Or do you think they are unbeatable?

Also with all these gifts, we cannot protect our own information. We can't have the privacy. Many many issues.

I'm not saying it's bad, I'm saying we cannot continue to depend on these freebies otherwise we will not develop!
