President Muhammadu Buhari Saturday appealed to his supporters across the nation to suspend campaigns for his re-election in compliance with the electoral law.
The president, whose appeal was contained in a statement by his spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina, said it had come to the realisation of the presidency that his supporters had started campaigns through advocacies and placement of advertisements in the media.

According to Adesina, the commitment of the supporters is appreciated but they must be mindful of existing timetable for electoral campaign as set by the electoral commission that is yet to be effective.

Furthermore, Adesina who said there would be enough time to campaign for Buhari’s election, added that commencing campaigns now would amount to jumping the gun which he advised them to avoid.

He added that while showcasing the achievements of the administration now is in order, outright canvassing for votes is off-side.

“It has been observed that some fervent supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari have begun what may be interpreted as political campaigns in their advocacies and advertisements in the mass media.
We appreciate their enthusiasm, borne out of desire to garner support for an administration that is actuated by nothing else, other than service for motherland, but we hereby appeal for patience, so that the game can be played according to the rules.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has a timetable for political campaigns, and we urge committed supporters round the country (and beyond) to be mindful of such.

“There will be ample time ahead to trumpet the good works of the Buhari administration, and solicit re-election, all for the good of our country and her people.

“While a chronicle of the achievements of the administration is in order now, outright canvasing may amount to jumping the gun. We are an administration committed to due process and scrupulous respect for rules, law and order.

“We appreciate our massive supporters nationwide, and urge them to exercise restraint till the race commences officially as stipulated by law.”

The Social Investment Programme – Nigeria’s most ambitious social welfare programme ever – rolled out across dozens of states. (Currently, 5.2 million primary school children in 28,249 schools in 19 states are being fed daily; 200,000 unemployed graduated enlisted into the Npower Job Scheme, and a quarter of a million loans already distributed to artisans, traders, and farmers).

Buhari signifying interest and telling Nigerians to seek reelection in 2019 is the father of election campaign.
Buhari should have postponed telling Nigerians about his reelection interest, if he really wanted to obey the Nigerian constitution.
