NIWA concessions Onitsha River Port to 2 firms

The Acting Managing Director, National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, Danladi Ibrahim, on Monday disclosed that the Onitsha river port in Anambra State has been concessioned to two companies and that the port may commence operations before the end of 2018.

Ibrahim said among the four existing river ports, two would be commissioned by the President before the end of the year.
Though the MD declined to disclose the names of the concessionaire for the river port project because the award letters are yet to be issued to the operators of the facility, the NIWA boss noted that the concession agreement will last for a period of 25 years.

According to him, “The concession has been completed, we open the financial bid on the 3rd of July and we have picked the most competitive concessionaires and any moment from now they will take over.

The NIWA boss said that skeletal operations is ongoing at the facility hence the concessionaires will take over the facility to commence full blown operations soon

Speaking on Baro port, Ibrahim assured that the road linking Abuja will be taken care of by relevant agencies, adding that the facility has been completed by 75% as the cargo handling equipment designated for the project are being installed by a German firm.

Ibrahim explained further that the dredging and concession of the two ports were awarded at the same period noting that vessel cannot load consignment when dredging is ongoing.

He added that “Government maximize the use of the resources of 12 major rivers in the country.

The lower River Niger was not left out, as capital dredging from Warri to Baro, covering a distance of 572km, has been concluded.

“It is apt to mention that NIWA ‘s achievement under Ameachi ‘s watch have become so enormous, mindful that it was within the present administration that the Baro river port reached 95% completion level, as government aims to provide cargo handling equipment and turn the basin into a river port.

“Already, work is on going to enable barges discharge their goods effectively is going on at Baro port. Also the cargo handling equipment for the Baro River Port are on going.

“It is our hope to see the full concession of the Onitsha River Port before the end of the year, completion of the Lokoja river port and supply of cargo handling equipment at Baro river port.

“We believe this will complement activities at the Lokoja river port and create multiple benefits with attendant multiplier effects on the economy, particularly in promoting multi modal transport and cheaper coastal service across 28 states of the federation.

Points of note

1 , They didn't mention the name of the concessionairs because none has been chosen for Onitsha, and maybe never ever.
2, No date was fixed for opening the ports operation, so we can wait till 2055 for start of operations
3 , this is just a face saving announcement to deceive the gullible into thinking FG can do anything for the south east, because we will ask about Onitsha after Baru.

Rotimi Amaechi right now "Is there's anyway we can re-channel the river Niger through Warri-Agbor back into Kogi state so we can avoid Onitsha altogether"?. grin grin

That was how goodluck promised to give us
Second Niger bridge but failed us after 6 years
In power only to b butted out by this APC govt
Now they are doing the same thing
Promising with no intension of fulfilling it
2019 will come and APC will fail only for
The ruling party in power at the time to promise
Us another project with no intent of making it
Happen , these politicians can lie!

No second Niger bridge , no sea port after
A decade of empty promises

Until it is seen operational, one has a right to regard it as "tales by moonlight".

As for the MD's refusal to disclose the names of the concessionaire based on that lame excuse reeks of lack of transparency.

Election around the corner

Give the yeebos the onitsha port but put a fulani in charge as the MD
.
After elections ensure fulani MD runs down the port and get NDLEA to say it's a major conduit for drug importation then shut down the port grin

Problem solved

APC get sense

If you do no section of the country will complain.

Thank you GEJ for completing this all important project for the SE region.

Onitsha represents to the SE what Lagos and PH represents to the SW and SS respectively.

Lol, just imagine!? These bastards really playing with us no be small. Everything about the SE is in future tense while anything that concerns north is done immediately. Is anyone still surprised on why Nigeria has remained a sh!thole despite its potentials? Imagine a commercial and industrial port-city like Onitsha where a huge percentage of Nigeria's imports goes to was relegated while a village in the north was completed!? Despite the fact that Baro village is far more inland and equally in an unviable area!? Is Nigeria not a cursed country when we have ret.ards and I'd!ots ruling the country.
Making Onitsha port operational will not be in the interest of Anambra state or even Igbos alone rather it will go a long way in solving the gridlock and frustration in Lagos due to too many trailers trying to access the ports there, will also reduce the need for Igbos to leave their region as others have been canvassing for and equally help to grow Nigeria's economy yet these bastards and re.tards ruling Nigeria think they would be doing Igbos a favour by making Onitsha port operational. Now, what is the basis for sharing a country with wicked people who will rather see us suffer than progress?? I piss on this worthless creation of Lugard, may he rot in hell.
