Roma president James Pallotta has joked that the club still want to sign Lionel Messi. The Serie A club named Francesco Calvo as its new chief revenue officer after he left Barcelona for the Italians.

Roma remain furious that they missed out on Brazilian winger Malcom after he joined the La Liga champions at the 11th hour.

The Italian club said in the aftermath: “Yesterday Barcelona apologised for the Malcom transfer but we do not accept their apologies unless they sell us Messi.”

And on Thursday, Pallotta quipped: “This changes nothing. We still want Messi!”

Calvo, who has also worked for Juventus, said: “I am very excited about joining AS Roma.

“This is a club with a tremendous vision for the future and represents one of the most innovative and interesting opportunities in the world of sports marketing.

“This is an exciting time for both Roma and Serie A, with the league showing very positive signs of growth, and I’m sure we have all the ingredients here to be successful in Italy and around the world
