Chelsea endured a poor campaign last term eventually loosing their crown to Manchester City and finishing outside the 'top four ' leading to Antonio Conte being supplanted by Maurizio Sarri.
Sarri's Chelsea would suffer no repeat of his predecessors opening day defeat last term as they took the lead in the 34th minute when Willian's cross met Ngolo Kante who's somewhat lucky, albeit beautiful strike left the Huddersfield goalie no clue. The world cup winners effort came off his shin rebounding off the ground to beat the keeper.
Chelsea doubled their advantage in the 45th minute through a fine penalty from debutant Jorginho after Marcos Alonso was fowled in the box after a fine team play from Chelsea had released the Spanish left back.
The Hosts struggled in vain to create clear chances in the opening 45 minutes but looked sharper after the interval, hitting the woodwork on one occasion - beating Chelsea newboy and world most expensive goalkeeper Kepa Arizabalaga.
The introduction of star player Hazard in place of the impressive Willian added more spark to the Chelsea attack, and it didn't take long before it payed off - in the 80th minute, Hazard made a fine run past a host of Huddersfield players before laying it on for Pedro who had a simpler job to do and did it perfectly by lobbing the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper's body.
Hazard's cameo served to show that the blues where much more insisive when their star player was on the pitch.
In the end, it was a comfortable victory for Chelsea and an easy 3points for Sarri.
