Cottage Industries are small-scale manufacturing businesses, many of which could take place in the home and most times labour intensive.

Cottage Industries are characterized by their enormous ability to provide employment for members of the family who own the production business and others living nearby.

For example, a labour-surplus economy like India, has benefited immensely from cottage Industries which provided over 30 million jobs between 2001 and 2011. Cottage Industries have also contributed to India's manufacturing output and export as much as 40%. With many of the these small Industries sited in rural communities, rural-urban migration is grossly reduced.

Taking a clue from India, Nigeria can capitalize on the large size of able bodied youth, many of which are unemployed, to pursue industrialization through cottage Industries. Though government have a huge rule to play, we must not wait for them to start talking about cottage Industries or using it as Campaign promises before we give it much attention.

Aside State and Local government areas, Churches and Religious Bodies, Community Development Associations, Celebrities, and individuals can be proprietors of cottage Industries.

To achieve this, an awareness must be created on the potentials of cottage Industries in redeeming our economy and in wealth creation and how to run them successfully. A massive business education orientation and financial literacy program must be developed especially for intending proprietors.

Policies and legislative frameworks must be developed and supported, while the youth who are the prospective employees must be engaged in capacity development.

Since most machinery used in cottage Industries are less sophisticated, local fabricators can be engaged with responsibilities of machines and equipment production, there by cutting cost. Our faculties of Engineering would be more involved in researching on edge cutting and innovative machines to meet up with the needs of these cottage Industries.

In many states, successive governments Campaign with promises of industrialization. Many on assuming office embark on expensive trips to foreign countries in the name of wooing foreign investors. Some commence white elephant projects which they loot money through, while the youth remain jobless and the future stay bleak.

We ordinary citizens and youth affected by the miserable state of our economy, cannot sit back to be entertained by politicians turning governance to a stage play or fold hands to watch them loot our already bleeding economy to death. We must rise and give our efforts into achieving a sustainable National economic recovery and development.

Our economic experts must not be on the sidelines just criticising government. They must speak up and tell government what to do. They sure stand up to anchor the call for a Cottage Industries.

We have seen the successes of the Not too young to Run bill and the #EndSars Campaigns. If we get serious with the agitation for the development of Cottage Industries in every nooks and crannies of our beloved Nation, we will be surprised at how fast things will change.

I wish to kindly appeal to social media influencers in Nigeria to join in advocating for a focus on Cottage Industries. If we speak in one voice to our Economy, it will have no choice but to resurrect.

No industrilized Nation of the world started with huge, big and insane technologies. Many grew from simple factories, developed their own technologies and are today global names. We cannot grow if we depending entirely on imported product and technologies.

Since progress and development is a process, we initiate the process of developing our own indigenous science and technology, which overtime, will go global.
