The National Assembly Joint Committee on Electoral Matters on Monday rejected the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) proposed budget of N189 billion, urging the electoral body to revert to the initial N143 billion earlier submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The lawmakers stated this after a closed-door meeting of the Joint Committee chaired by Senator Suleiman Nazif (APC, Bauchi).

Nazif, who read out the resolution of the Joint Committee to newsmen in Abuja, said, "As you are aware, our last meeting was held on August 17.

"We decided to resume today August 27, to consider the harmonised budget of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

"The Joint Committee has sat and we have deliberated a position to adopt the N143 billion earlier presented to us by President Muhammadu Buhari.

"It is the wish of this Committee that INEC present the N143 billion as requested by Mr. President.

"This Committee therefore adjourns and will reconvene tomorrow by 1 pm to consider the N143bn INEC budget."

Stop misleading the public, the balance of the N46b is what the President proposed that it could be made available in 2019 before the election. The total budget is N189 which the INEC proposed it should be approved at a goal. What the Senate proposed today was the N143B will be made available this year and thereafter the balance of N46 would be made available before 2019 election.

Don't let people deceive you. The Senate never changed any INEC budget. It was widely televised Today. What the Senate proposed today was that N143b will be made available before the general election and the balance of N46b will be made available by 2019.

Don't believe the hearsays the op posted. The Senate as at committee level that sat today never reduced the INEC budget. What the Senate did was to make the N189b available to INEC in 2 instalments. The Senate committee on electoral matters proposed to approve N143b now and by 2019 before the election promised to approve the balance of N46b.

I wonder the kind of school some of us attended. The National assembly Joint committee, according to the news adopt N143 billion earlier presented by PMB. INEC is asking for more(N189Billion). From the various comments made by nairalanders here, shows that the alot of the political crisis in this country are as a result of blind followership. Any objective reader will not come here and be accusing PMB or hailing Saraki.I pity our youths.
