Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana as a Category 3 storm on August 29, 2005.

Over 1800 lost their lives in the storm, and Katrina ultimately caused over $100Billion of damage.

The storm made a direct hit on New Orleans on 29 August 2005.

The city's dated system of levees and flood walls failed in more than 50 places, flooding 85 percent of the bowl-like city, most of which is below sea level.

The storm produced images never before seen in an American city: desperate masses wading through flooded neighbourhoods, bodies decomposing on city streets, and residents on rooftops pleading for help.

A million people had fled the area before Katrina arrived, but tens of thousands had lacked the means or ability to get out.

Many sought refuge at the city's Superdome, converted to an enormous relief shelter.

Hundreds of others were plucked from the rooftops of their inundated houses by military helicopters and taken to the city's convention centre.

That was a deadly hurricane. It was a cat 5 hurricane, very destructive. Almost all the flood protection structures around New Orleans were destroyed by storm surges and 80% of the city was submerged in water. Many prisoners were abandoned in their cells while the guards sought shelter. It was a real disaster.

...i remembered driving through New Orleans 6 months after the hurricane, the devastation was still visible...turned a once beautiful part of the US into an underdevelopment 3rd world nation...so bad that the government of George W. Bush didn't act on time to save human lives...of course there's little that can be done to properties, once the leevees broke...
