I recall that beginning from 1999 after Igbos assisted their today's enemy North in robbing Ekweme of the PDP ticket for Obasanjo, and giving Obasanjo bloc votes in the general election, the front burner issue immediately became the prospect of Obasanjo rewarding them with the choosing of an Igbo successor in 2003 going by the PDP NWC's initial one-term-per-region arrangement which, when the time came, Obasanjo and Atiku discarded only for Igbos to, without any misgiving, re-programme their minds on the assumption that Obasanjo would finally honour the agreement in 2007. But when the time came again Obasanjo told them it was a gentleman's agreement. But rather than complain and threaten to reject the PDP, Igbos surprisingly were the first to endorse Yaradua the beneficiary of the botching of the gentleman's agreement. One would have expected that Yaradua demonstrated a sense of responsibility and compensation to Igbos by choosing an Igbo running mate. But he ended up picking Jonathan whose region's agitation for presidency was all too new compared with that of the SE which started in 1999. Again, rather than rightly eliciting rejections from them, Igbos rationalized it by beginning to lie to themselves that the SS and SE are brothers hence one and the same. Eventually GEJ accidentally clinched presidency and Igbos themselves totally buried the Igbo president prospect and took up the job of defending a SS presidency more than the SS people themselves. The few Igbos who reasoned and acted otherwise became an endangered species among their own kinsmen.
With Jonathan's loss in 2015, Igbos wept more than the bereaved region.
In the end, the Igbo presidency prospect originally billed for 2003 has now been reduced to a highly uncertain project of Igbo VP ticket against 2019
