Brake problem is a real issue in Nigeria. People are likely to wash their cars several times a week but would forget to take the car to the mechanic to fix a squealing noise in the brake.

Brake problems happen all the time. Failed brakes cause untold accidents on the highways. Most times you see someone speeding up in a street hoping that the brake will come to his rescue when the times comes, but brakes fail. It’s a fact.

When was the last time you had your brakes examined? When was the last time your brake started making that squealing noise or a screeching drawl?

Brakes of your car start giving problems because of a lot of reasons. Brakes become real hot when driving. Brakes even get hotter quicker than the exhaust pipe because it constantly rubs against the wheels.

However, a sticking caliper, old caliper, rubber brake hose, or a faulty master cylinder could make the brake go bad and cause accident on the road.

It is advised to change the caliper every 10 years. So if your car is 10 years old and above, consider changing the calipers.

This is because old calipers start brushing against the wheels and cause the brake pads to become hotter as you drive. This causes the brake pads to wear out easily.

Below are a few problems with the braking system that could occur over time.

1.The car pulls to one side during braking –

This can also be caused by a sticking brake caliper or plugged rubber brake hose. Try to determine which brakes are dragging and check for sticking caliper first. You will also notice the pads on one side of the car may be worn more than the other.

2. Squealing brake makes noise when coming to a stop –

This is usually caused by brake pads that are vibrating in the caliper. Add brake pad paste and if that does not solve the problem replace your pads with new ones.

3. Steering wheel shakes during heavy braking –

This indicates one or more of your brake rotors are chopped. This is caused by age and/or over-heating. Replacing the suspected rotor or rotors almost always solves this problem. Always install new pads when replacing rotors.

4. Brakes make grinding noise when applied with force

This means that brake Pads are worn down and making metal to metal contact on your brake rotors. This is a real safety issue. Do not hesitate to get your brakes inspected and repaired. If it is front pads making the noise you may also see the brake pad warning light illuminating on your dash.

5. Brake Pedal feels soft or goes all the way to the floor

This indicates you probably have air in your brake lines. Pressure brake bleeding is the best way to make sure you get all the air out. If you have done a complete bleed and are still experiencing the problem then it is likely your master cylinder needs replacement.

6. Brake Pedal feels hard when pushing on the brakes

There is a seal between the booster and the master cylinder that may go bad. If the seal is ok it could be a faulty brake booster but not always. The problem may be due to insufficient vacuum getting to the booster. Be sure to test your vacuum system before replacing an expensive brake booster.

7. Brake pedal jumpy

Sometimes, the ABS system may come on even when it is not needed. This is usually caused by dirty or faulty wheel sensors. If this happens, what you need to do is to clean the wheel sensors or have the sensor changed altogether.
