Once upon a time Toyota designed and sold the diminutive smart car badged as the Scion or Toyota iQ in Europe, North America and Asia.

It was a 3 door hatchback with a 1.0 - 1.4 L inline 3/inline 4 cylinder engine producing 67 - 97 horsepower with a manual/CVT transmission.

=========================================

Along came Aston Martin, the famous British manufacturer of all things powerful but suave and refined, who needed some help with their regulation fleet emissions, so they promptly slapped the Aston Martin badge on the iQ, and the Aston Martin Cygnet was born.

It had similar specifications with the original Toyota, but with more leather, a hint of haughty elegance and more tea drinking gentlemen perusing the morning paper in tweed jackets.

Not much to look at or enjoy, really. A rolls Royce horse is still a horse.

=========================================

That is, until someone at Aston Martin had the bright idea to take the original 430 horsepower, 361 lb-ft of torque, 4.7 litre Aston Martin Vantage S engine, front and rear subframes,19-inch wheels, and quite beefy carbon fiber wheel arches, to create the one-off Aston Martin Cygnet V8.

The cabin has a roll cage, but that’s the sacrifice the owner is willing to make to own the one-of-a-kind Cygnet with a Vantage heart. There’s carbon fiber just about everywhere, along with body-hugging Recaro racing seats and some controls inherited from the Vantage.

The result is an awesome 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 second masterpiece of carfection, a pocket rocket Bond himself would be envious of.

Thankfully and unfortunately, this is a one-off, designed for a customer with a large imagination, and an even larger bank account.

There is nothing on wheels that I appreciate more, that a wolf in sheep's clothing, that is to say a car that looks tame and docile, but is in fact capable of blistering acceleration far exceeding the stock capabilities of the vehicle.

This is a fine example of that "less is more" philosophy in practice. How the engineers squeezed a monstrous 4.7 liter V8 into such a tiny car is a feat of precision modification that beggars belief, considering the space limitations that had to be overcome during this conversion.

I would love to own a little pocket-rocket like this, just to phuck with hot-rod car owners who would look down their noses at such a "toy" car, only to have their frigging doors blown off when I stomp on the gas the instant that traffic light turns green.

I love it. Two thumbs UP for this masterful creation.
