The people of Aika and Abala-Oshimili, coastal communities in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State, have abandoned their homes, shelters and farmlands after the River Niger overflowed its banks, leaving devastation in its wake.

David Olisa, an indigene of Aika community, said the flood had taken over the communities and people were moving their relatives out of the villages before the situation gets out of control.

He said people were going through Asaba to charter speed boats from Atani in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State to Aika. Then, they'll take their relatives back to Atani, before returning to Asaba.

Reacting to the development, another indigene, Daniel Ogiriki, expressed fears that more communities in the council area were likely to be affected in a matter of days.

He called on the state government to come to the aid of the victims, stressing the need for other communities along the Niger to be alerted with no further delay.

cheesy

So river Niger is still in existence? It's been a while since I visited Nigeria. I just hope things have changed for better as being reported by the media. Flood can be very dangerous sometimes. Appealing to the mermaid in charge of the river is the most rational thing to do. Their demands won't cost more than few homo sapiens. That's far better than endangering the lives of a whole community.
