HiFL® 2018 Match Recap: Journey to the Finals

It’s down to 8 schools in the Higher Institutions Football League and the excitement keeps flaming up day after day. The journey so far has separated the men from the boys as only eight schools made it through the hurdles of the preliminaries into the quarterfinals.

The 5th and 6th of September hosted the first leg of the quarterfinals. It was an energetic game as the teams were at loggerheads to win the match.
Hoping to repeat the three goal thrashing form, OAU Giants found UNIBEN Royals a bit too tough to bite. The shocker ended in a two nil win in favour of Uniben with the second goal coming in the closing minutes of the game. Goals were scored by Ikechukwu Okoro and Okhomina Gideon in the second and ninety-fifth minutes respectively.

Meanwhile in Calabar, DELSU Titans continued their impressive run by holding the home team UNICAL Malabites to a one all draw. UNICAL drew first blood in the fourteenth minute through a goal by Marvis Etta. The goal obviously made the DELSU boys more eager keeping in mind that they needed to keep their hopes alive for the return leg. Their efforts paid off through a stunner from Jeremiah Osuebe in the sixty sixth minute.

Turning our attention to the table top city in a thrilling encounter between UNIJOS Highlanders and defending NUGA champions UAM Tillers (University of Agriculture, Makurdi). The UAM Tillers’ goal keeper proved his worth as a ball stopper and ensured his team return to Makurdi with an upper hand after the goalless draw. The draw puts pressure on UNIJOS Highlanders to perform against a UAM Tillers who have an impressive record at home.

HiFL action returned on Thursday with the ‘better by far boys’ UNILORIN Warriors, travelling to UDU Sultan strong hold. Totally dusting off the twelve hours trip, the Afonja boys ensured they tore through to secure a two nil lead. Goals from Hawal Ogunrombi and Ogunbenro Mustapha in the seventeenth and fifty seventh minutes secured the vital lead and sets the stage for what may be the biggest come back in #HiFL2018 in the return leg.
