Prof. Tam David-West, a former Minister of Petroleum, has rejected the national honour of Commander of the Order of Niger (CON) which the Federal Government is to confer on him as part of the country’s 50th independence anniversary on October 1.

David-West cited the government's wasteful N10bn budget as one of the two reasons for his refusal of the award. While acknowledging that it is a great thing to be honoured by one’s country, he also said the CON was not appropriate for a person who has served meritoriously as a commissioner for education, minister of petroleum and minister of mines, power and steel at different times. According to him,he was entitled to a national honour of at least Commander of the Federal Republic.

David-West is one of the 186 Nigerians named as beneficiaries of the national honours for their contributions to national development.

On the honours list just approved by President Goodluck Jonathan are the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi; Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mrs. Farida Waziri; second republic Senate President, Joseph Wayas; and Chairman of African Petroleum Plc, Mr. Femi Otedola, among others.

While speaking with journalists in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, on Wednesday, David-West said that because of his outstanding performance as Minister of Petroleum under Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (rtd), the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries granted the country additional quota which yielded an extra $12bn income for Nigeria.

Joseph Wayas is billed to received the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger award, while Sanusi and Otedola will be awarded the Commander of the Order of the Niger.

A press statement by the National Honours Award Committee in Abuja yesterday said nobody would be given the nation’s highest national honours of GCFR, which is reserved for serving heads of state while three people will get the GCON award.

Thirteen of the awardees bag the CFR honours, 27 will get the CON award, 43 will be awarded the OFR honours, 46 are in the OON category, 22 in the MFR honours list while 25 will bag the MON award. The remaining seven awardee will be conferred with the Federal Republic Medal.

The statement signed by the Committee’s Secretary, Mallam Shehu Malumfashi listed other awardees to include the former Chief of General Staff, Rear Admiral Mike Akhigbe who together with the Chief Justice of the Federation Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu will receive the GCON award; immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Patricia Etteh, CFR; Hon Ghali Umar Na’Abba, another former Speaker of House of Representatives, CFR; Chief of Staff to President Jonathan, Chief Mike Oghiadhome, CFR; and former Finance Minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, CFR.

Read between the lines, fellas. The ONLY reason why he rejected the award was because he felt it was lower than what he deserved, the other 10billion naira reason is just to cover up the main reason: to please the people. If he had been given what he felt he deserved (for looting the nation like his compatriots in looting e.g. Etteh), he would have gladly accepted the award and not think abt the 10billion thingie

Professor Tam David West was the few who refused to loot Nigeria under IBB as the petroleum minister.  Others are Olu Falae and IBB's deputy, Air vice marshall Ebitu Ukiwe. Go and read history.

Is it not the same incorruptible david west that is allowing the legitimate looting of nigeria by the house of rogues(senate) that he heads in the name of bogus salaries and allowance? We don't need to read history to know whether he is corrupt or not,he is living it out right before our eyes.

You are not reading between he lines. It is not because of the N10B but because he felt his own share was not enough COC instead of GCON

Pray David West and David Mark are not same or am i missing something/. West was removed just for his unflinching stance on principles but his saying that the award about to given to him was beneath him raises eye brows and then he mixes it up with the 10 b naira matter. Methinks he should have just picked one for his refusal. Either is legitimate in its own rights but mixing up the two is quite confusing as to his real reasons.
