The Police in Enugu State have arrested members of an armed robbery gang who posed as passengers to snatch motorcycles from commercial motorcyclists in Enugu.

The suspects identified as Ibenyenwa Chukwuemeka, aged 24; Ugochukwu Esom (21); and Emenike Ikechukwu (21) were arrested by operatives of the Federal Special Anti Robbery Squad attached to the state command on September 2, 2018.

Our correspondent learnt that the police had been on the trail of the gang since they snatched a motorcycle from one of the commercial motorcyclists, also known as okada riders, at gunpoint in the Four Corner area of Enugu on August 28, 2018.

The spokesman of Enugu State Police Command, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the development, said the suspects had been terrorising members of the public, particularly okada riders, in the Four Corner area.

The three-man gang usually posed as passengers but would snatch the motorcycle from the unsuspecting okada rider along the way.

”The suspects had conspired and robbed an okada rider of his motorcycle on gunpoint on 28/8/18 along Four Corner road, having posed as passengers.

“Unknown to the okada rider, they are armed robbers and after snatching the motorcycle, they escaped to an unknown destination,” Amaraizu said.

He added that the arrest of the suspects was made possible by “intelligence information.”

One of the suspects, Emenike Ikechukwu, blamed his involvement in armed robbery on “hardship.”

The suspect, who claimed to be a father of one, claimed that his inability to take care of his child made him to venture into crime.

Ikechukwu confessed that he intended to use the snatched motorcycle to start business as a commercial motorcyclist.

The suspect also said he planned to settle his accomplices, Ugochukwu Esom and Ibenyenwa Chukwuemeka, from the proceeds of the proposed okada business.

Chukwuemeka, who was arrested with a single barreled gun, disclosed that he bought the weapon from one Utuagbigwe for N10,000. He claimed that the said Utuagbigwe was dead.

Amaraizu said the stolen motorcycle was recovered from members of the gang after their arrest.
