She was a presidential candidate who had the guts to challenge Paul Kagame a rebel leader turned president.
Kagame's rebels from the minority ethnic Tutsi group ( less than 15% of the population ) took over following the shooting down of president Juvenal Habyarimana's plane in 1994. Habyarymana died in the plane crash.He was from the majority Hutu ethnic group( more than 85% of the population).
A civil war followed his death when angry Hutu took revenge. More than 800 000 people died ( Rwandan genocide).
Reports said most of the dead were Tutsi, but thousands of Hutu also lost their lives in the war.
In 2010 Ms. Victoire Ingabire a Hutu political leader returned home from the Netherlands were she was living. She questioned why no Hutu name was mentioned among the genocide victims.
Good enough for Kagame to send her to jail
on the ground she ' belittled ' the Rwandan genocide.
