Serena Williams has broken her silence after the controversy at this year's US Open final.

Serena was defeated by Japan's 20-year-old Naomi Osaka on September 8, but the story didn't end there.

Serena was deducted a game and point for three code violations during the match.

She was accused of her coach helping her, smashing her racquet, and arguing with umpire Carlos Ramos.

Serena also accused Ramos of 'Sexism' and was fined $17,000.

Before now, Serena had not spoke again about the final, but gave an interview to Australian TV show The Project to explain her opinion on the incident.

Williams says her coach Patrick Mouratoglou did not send any signals from the stands even though he has confirmed he made attempts to.

“He said he made a motion. I don’t understand what he was talking about,” she said.

“We’ve never had signals.

“I just don’t understand it, if you’re a female, you should be able to do even half of what a guy can do.”

Williams then explained that she feels strongly that she did the right thing by complaining about the umpire’s actions.

“I feel it’s really important to stand up for what you believe in,” she said.

“Especially if it can affect the future and affect a lot of people in the future.

“That’s what it’s all about.”
