A 34-million-pound businessman says he can not pay more than 200,000 pounds to his ex-wife, a court said.

The man, who is based in Oman, however gave his lawyers almost 100,000 pounds sterling to fight in this case, it was said in the High Court.

Currently, a judge in a divorce court ruled that he must pay himself pound for pound and give the same amount he paid his lawyers to his ex-wife's legal team.

The man, based in Oman, told Judge Holman that his assets were "illiquid and unenforceable" and that he "simply" could not pay his ex-wife.

He said the family business on which his fortune was based had suffered a "considerable setback" following the collapse of Carillion's infrastructure giant.

But the judge heard that the man had found the "way" to pay "no less than 95,000 pounds" to a "prestigious" law firm that represented him.

Judge Holman has now been the subject of a book-for-pound order. The judge ruled that the man should not give money to his lawyers unless the lawyers of his ex-wife have the same.

The details of the case appeared in a judge's decision after a hearing before the Family Division of the London District Court.

The judge did not name the family, but said the wife and children of the couple lived in London.

He said the two were fighting for money. The man had agreed or ordered to pay alimony pending a decision on the amount his ex-wife should withdraw.

He was supposed to make payments to finance the daily life of his ex-wife and children and cover the accounts of the lawyers he was paying during the legal battle.

Judge Holman said that the man owed more than £ 200,000 to his ex-wife. "The husband says in his statement that he can not make these payments," the judge said in his ruling.

"In his statement, he says that his net worth is approximately 34 million pounds, but he says that these assets are" illiquid and impracticable ".

"The family business on which his personal fortune is based has recently suffered a major setback due to the publicized collapse of Carillion plc.

"Then he says in summary that he simply could not make these payments to his wife and children, nor to him."

But the judge added: "He found the money, or means to pay, no less than £ 95,000 to his own lawyers."

In ordering the book to the pound, Judge Holman said that if the man paid one pound to his lawyers, he also had to pay one pound to his wife's lawyers to pay the money he owed them.

He said that the "facts and circumstances" of the case required such a measure.
