Cmanforall:I'm not in the medical field but one thing I know is that doctors, nurses and those working in the medical field knows how crucial their job entails in saving of lives. if the lady alleged that a wrong blood was administered to her brother which led to his death and a doctor who's a professional couldn't notice changes on the young man during treatment then the doctor, lab scientist should be held liable for gross negligence. |

You think buhari and his fellow politicians are mad when they travel to Uk or USA for any little sickness? They know they health system here is messed up. If you know the number of people nigerian doctors and hospitals especially govt hospitals have killed, then you will understand that there is no hope anywhere. |

helpee: I agree with you. Negligence is not an ordinary English expression in medicine. It means something much deeper. Unless you confidently follow up on a death, you will never find out what's the cause or whether it's a result of negligence, bad practice or overindulgence. Here is where Nigerians go wrong. We still believe autopsy hurts the dead. We are yet to see how it helps and saves the living. Condolences to the family of the dead. They should be allowed to grieve in peace but pursue the case to a logical end. Ranting on social media is definitely not the way to do that. It will cost a little but it will be worth it. There's no price tag for getting closure after a sad incidence such as losing a loved one. Unless closure is gotten this poor lady will never trust a doctor again in her life. Sadly, unless you are deluded, you can't do without one. |

Jaqenhghar: First of all, I never said its always the patients fault. That said, some patients have unrealistic expectations. Lets take the case you put forward. "The doctors could not make a diagnosis". How equipped is the center ? What is the quality of staff ? how much is a patient ready to pay for medical services ? Nigerians will not / cannot pay yet they want western levels of health care. A patient pays N5,000 for card, and 25k for drugs and treatment (I do not lay blame here, many do not have spare cash) you should not expect John Hopkins levels of care. If the minimum wage is 18,000 and a CT scan costs N55,000 you do not have to be a Nobel economist to realize that many people will not be getting CT scans they need. In your case, I do not mean to demean your input but 'hundreds of thousands of naira' is only a couple of thousand dollars, so, you can see that the plummeting economy has a role to play. Equipment and supplies are after all purchased internationally in cold hard currency Diagnosis is a multidisciplinary undertaking. How many trained radiographers, laboratory scientists, medical record specialists do we have in our hospitals ? Considering the abysmal state of education in Nigeria today, when do you think that will change ? Hospitals abroad have dedicated power supply direct from the grid and emergency backup. Here we cannot even manage 10 hours a day in teaching hospitals. There are doctors in Nigeria today who earn N85,000 per month. There are nurses who earn N45,000 per month. Qualified people. Best in class. You expect these people to be dedicated to your care ? To read up your case all night ? To show unfailing dedication to duty ? You tell me. When our relatives leave Nigeria to practice medicine abroad, we hail them and rejoice like the simpletons we collectively are. A doctor practicing in the US or Canada is of use to the people of the USA and Canada and practically useless to Nigeria. It is that same specialist that is the missing link in your missed diagnosis. So when next you see or hear a doctor leaving Nigeria, weep; don't rejoice. If Nigerians paid as much attention to health , education and accountability of public officials as we do to football, celebrities, big brother and thieves masquerading as 'men of God' maybe things will slowly change. Ps: I typed this on my phone while in transit. It's a bit disjointed but the main gist is hopefully clear. 3 Likes |

You clearly didnt read what I wrote let me spell it to you again. we visited like 3 teaching hospitals and 2 private hospitals. Money was NEVER the issue. There is no test we did not do. No money we did not spare so dont tell me that bullshit about we dont want to pay we were willing to fly her abroad but for one my cousin ( a doctor like you) who kept reassuring us that it wasnt necessary. Maybe in your wisdom we should have treated her ourselves too. Mtcheew |

BeingFrank: A friend of mine whom I met on Nairaland died because he was given wrong blood or God knows what He was already out of comma when I was asked to get blood at the blood bank in Lasuth. On getting there, I gave the receipt to the Dr I met, he opened the fridge and was looking confused, he could not remember where he kept the blood we initially gave him, he brought out one, looked at it , kept it back and was grumbling to himself. I told him the blood group, he asked me to shout up, that he knows. He opened the fridge again, brought out another one, kept it, for about 5 minutes, he was looking confused. He Sha gave me one. I got to the ward, it was passed on him. In less than 20 minutes, I watched him died. |

IamaNigerianGuy:You talk of poor pay etc so is it the patient's fault that you feel underpaid? Let me tell you even if they paid you 1 million a month with this shitty attitude nothing will change. I like the idea personally of more of you leaving this shithole to know how it is being done in saner climates. At least there you wont have the luxury of killing patients and blaming them after. |

Jaqenhghar:when you were quoting me, I knew you were harbouring some bitterness against the wrong set of people. Sorry for your mum. You said SIMPLE DIAGNOSIS THEY COULDNT MAKE. You know it us simple but you yourself can't make it. For you to know it is simple you should have made it now. Now let's be more professional...you took her to 3 teaching hospitals and 2 private hospitals ...does that not tell you it must be a very serious case. Doctors don't claim to be God, they are only humans. So all the doctors in five hospitals and all the people doing the test couldn't make A SIMPLE DIAGNOSIS WHICH YOU AS A GENIUS ALREADY KNEW IT IS SIMPLE. You are the one with ego here not the doctors. Come down from your high horse and be humble, they will school you. Depending on the stage at presentation, a definite diagnosis is not ALWAYS POSSIBLE OR A MUST. WORLDWIDE!!!! You may know the kidney is damaged beyond repair, you may not know the exact singular thing that caused it. You may only know the risk factors like hypertension, diabetes etc if they are present. You may have ORGANIC DIAGNOSIS like knowing the liver is damaged, you may not be able to pinpoint the exact cause. And in late stage, there may be myriad of problems without a single DIAGNOSIS again...the liver, the kidney, the heart even the brain may all be damaged and you may not know the exact thing that started the cascade. So diagnosis is not about telling you one singular thing that is causing the problem.... And that doesn't always affect management. If a kidney is damaged already, we know what to do even though we may not know the exact cause. So leave diagnosis for the professional and make a name for yourself in your own profession. By the way, worldwide, the best set of people study medicine. So the doctors are a reflection of the society. We didn't come from Egypt. We are Nigerians.. So tell me, which profession is so good in Nigeria so that we know doctors are deliberately wicked. Is it not engineers that build roads that get spoilt in one month? Is it not bankers that run banks down? So saying all Nigerian doctors are bad is like saying you are so so bad cos while not looking down on other profession, the best studied medicine so you couldn't have been better in your profession. So the rot is in the country...not in individual profession |

Jaqenhghar: I'm about to let you in on a secret... Some diseases may not have a diagnosis...instantly...because they are either rare, undiscovered, or unusual. I'll give an example. The husband of an old friend of mine. His disease baffled doctors in this country for a few months...before they foound the diagnosis...a rare disease, so rare that I doubt most doctors in the world have heard of it. And the treatment 1) cost a lot of money 2) it was of no use eventually...the guy died. (The disease was autoimmume...it essentially meant his body's immune system was attacking him..and when that happens...) So, that's what may have affected your mother...a disease that was like that which killed my friend's husband. Another thing is that finding a diagnosis is not that easy in Nigeria. As an example...yesterday I was reading about a child with a rare genetic disease...which could only be diagnosed with extensive genome sequencing to find the actual genes. In Nigeria we don't have that kind of genetic sequencning. It would cost millions to import and millions more to maintain....so a Nigerian kid would So, what I am saying is...basically we may not have been able to diagnose your mum's illness because quite simply we did not have the equipment to do so. You talk of CT, MRI....welll there are more advanced forms of imaging like PET scan. Also, most Nigerian hospitals have a very limited set of tests to do. We are not like Western hospitals that can do all sorts of tests in a few hours...we have out of date machines, very few people to run and maintain them. So we do the best we can...and hope we finda solution. And what iamanigerian guy said about cost is true. The average budget for a teaching hospital in Nigeria is $10-15million. Meanwhile the same hospital in the USA has a budget exceeding $200million...if not more...paid for by high medical bills. If we were to chanrge the same medical bills we want to charge in Nigeria...that they do in the US... there would be protests. So,,,poor resuoirces means you get poor care. You get what you pay for. If you pay for a second hand book...don;t expect a brand new one. And yes, in this country, medicos do their best...and still get blamed unfairly for the death. As an example...we lost a patient in a hospital where I worked. Said patient had kidney disease. He was on dialysis...when he died (which happens in rare instances even under the best of circumstances). His son blamed us for the death. Assumed that we just sat down and watched his father die. We did not. I know we have bad doctors in this country....but there are a host of factors also at play. |

correctbae: I have some questions for the lady 1.How do you know the doctors and nurses were not qualified? 2.How do you know your brother got an overdose. I'm not saying it did not happen(I once had to sort out a patient who got injected with the wrong dose of a medication several years ago...so I know these things happen)...but how did you know? 3.How did you know he got the wrong type of blood? Did someone tell you? 4. Exactly what disease was your brother suffering from? I also have some questions for the medical team...docs, nurses, lab techs 1.Was there a process for checking blood about to be transfused ...were there things like blood transfusion forms, proper reagents, etc. 2.Was any effort made to communicate well with the patient's relative about the illness...UNLESS...the patient specifically requested that you tell them nothing(happens...) 3.How is your record keeping? 4.Were the drugs given to this patient checked before giving it to him? (Once nearly lost a patient...if not that I and the nurse checked the drug before giving....which led to us heading to the pharmancy...which led to a finding of wrong packaging.) 1 Like |

helpee:Oh you were the one acting at first like we didnt do enough or we didnt pay enough. Qestioning the kind of hospitals we took her to when it was all stated clearly there. Then you did the whole stunt of doctors are always right and we dont owe patients anything routine. If a man is sick is he wrong for going to a doctor? Now you are coming back to my point. There is a problem something I expected you to admit to which you have finally ( or should I say grudgingly) done. Yes a diagnosis is simple when one knows what one is doing. Yes we left diagnosis for the so called professionals and paid the price. We have learnt our lessons I only pity the ones who cant afford to fly or fly their loved ones abroad. And I pity anyone who has to to be treated by you |

1Sharon:Both doctors and nurses goes for experiences in a general, cottage and teaching hospitals..There are times for psychiatric, community, and hospital posting.. Those quacks doesn't have theoretical and practical basis.. They are just left to practice blind folded... Before someone lays hand on you, ask the person to show you his /her licence.. It's your right to be treated by someone that is competent and has undergone basic training in the field of medicine /Nursing.. |
