Rapid population growth in some Africa’s poorest countries could put future progress towards reducing global poverty and improving health at severe risk, a report by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has revealed. Co-Chairman of the foundation, Bill Gates, said in the Foundation’s 2018 Goalkeepers Report launched yesterday that young Africans were inheriting a continent where fewer and fewer people have to struggle to survive and could instead devote their energy to planning and investing in the future. However, the report disclosed that demographic trends show that over one billion people have lifted themselves out of poverty in the past 20 years, but added that population explosion, particularly in Africa, could be a challenge the decline in the number of extremely poor people in the world, and it may even start to rise. Nigeria was said to have taken over as the country with the highest number of extremely poor people, according to a report by Brookings Institution, thereby overtaking India with a population of 1.3 billion people as against Nigeria’s 200 million. According to the report, the number of Nigerians in extreme poverty increases by six people every minute. “Population growth in Africa is a challenge,” Gates said on telephone about the report’s findings. It found that poverty in Africa is increasingly concentrated in a few countries, which also have among the fastest growing populations globally. It projected that by 2050 over 40 per cent of world’s extremely poor people will live in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria. On the best ways of tackling the growing population and poverty challenge, Gates said improving access to birth control was key, adding that this should be combined with investment in health and education of young people. “The biggest things are the modern tools of contraception,” Gates said, adding: “If you have those things available, then people have more control of spacing their children.” The report, tracked 18 data points on United Nations development goals, including child and maternal deaths, stunting, access to contraceptives, HIV, malaria, extreme poverty, financial inclusion and sanitation. In its family planning section, the report called on policymakers to empower women to exercise their right to choose the number of children they could have, when to have them and with whom. The U.N. data has projected that Africa will account for over half of the world’s population growth between 2015 and 2050, while its population is projected to double by 2050 and double again by 2020. Nothing but the truth, With a population of 200m, a reserve of $40bn, a debt of $63bn (N23tr) and dwindling rate of crude oil, its only a matter of time before we hit the rocks if concerned leadership is not brought to the fore front. Nigeria is strongly in need of birth control, some call it buying population, but in essence its majorly a poor population. 8 Likes 1 Share |

sadly they use poverty as a tool in APC . they stop paying salary, borrow heavily, give forex only to pilgrims and government estacode, budget heavily on ridiculous things like asorock maintainance. to give a simple example how our rulers created this poverty mess; landing cost of Heathrow airport London cost $5,200, (N1.8m), NAF001 is a Boeing 737, that burns 750 gallons (almost 3000liters) per hour, all this cost for treatment in UK, and we can't upgrade asorock clinics or any hospital in abuja to serve all medical purpose. when the standard cost to build a world class medical center is $60000 for a 1000 square feet 9 Likes 3 Shares |

Nice one from Bill Gate. But on behalf of zombies and people from the sophisticated tribe, we will still vote massively for Buhari next year. Who cares about extreme poverty Wealth is nothing but vanity. Our sentiments, tribes, regions and religions come first before any national development. That's how APC and some Nigerians think. 8 Likes 1 Share |

Bill Gates charitable organization is focused on reducing the population of Africans and maybe even eliminating Africans from the surface of the earth. Population growth isn't the cause of poverty otherwise China should be the poorest nation on earth. The West would rather give aid to African countries in a bid to keep African leaders perpetually corrupt instead of leaning heavily against corrupt leadership and insisting that they do right by their citizens. I won't be surprised to learn that HIV and Ebola were lab-manufactured diseases planned to reduce the population of Africa. Imagine the horror of the West at the thought of a superpower rising from Africa. They will forever be grateful that Nigerian leaders are eternally and incurably corrupt being the largest black nation in the world. 5 Likes |

It projected that by 2050 over 40 per cent of world’s extremely poor people will live in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria. This will not be our portion as a nation, they said more than this in 2008 that by 2015 Nigeria will break here we are. Moreover, what is the population of China over 1.7 billions they are now the world's number one while America is using old glory? I believe strongly that our shame today as a nation will turn to fame. 1 Like 1 Share |

Negativity everywhere. And the architect of these negativities still wants to cling to power. As a matter of fact, the church ( Catholic Church especially) should as a matter of expediency, change their stand and teaching on contraception. Africans need to stop breeding like rats. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Nigerians should take Bill Gates population idea with a pinch of salt. Yes I belive poverty is on the increase in Nigeria, but population is not really the problem. Nigeria's poverty problem is structural. The current Nigerian structure is a system that celebrates mediocrity and incompetence. Mediocrity, incompetence and poverty goes hand in hand. They are inseparable. There are wicked plans to reduce Africa's population drastically through various means like disease, food and water poisoning, conflicts, vaccines etc. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Awol1:Population is not the determinant of poverty, human development index is the determinant of poverty. Even if a country has a large population, if the population (human resources) is developed by way of education and training, the country's population becomes an asset, rather than a liability. 3 Likes 1 Share |

FarahAideed: An administration of 3.5 years CANNOT be responsible for poverty. Look at the catchment age of those affected. Poverty was a PDP achievement. There was always poverty during Abacha regime but I believe it actually started worsening during OBJ's second term. OBJ neglected the poor and spent the next 4 years raidin3g billionaires, giving tax breaks and neglecting HDI. All of us were dummies living in cities, driving two cars per family, burning imported diesel for power and deceibing ourselves. When Yaradua died and the empty GEJ came in, poverty became endemic in the North. Amnesty program, NDDC, and 13% derivation were the killer blows to the North made worse by the lack of intelligence of the Northern governors all PDP. Let us a'll say the truth and shame the devil. The PDP must never be allowed in power ever again. If they delivered poverty after an unprecedented oil boom, what will they do with scarcity? 3 Likes 3 Shares |

FarahAideed: So you have cowardly shifted the goal post back to 1983/84. This is the mark of cowards. NPN looted your country between 1979 and 1983. They racked up debts that were unverifiable and the oil price crashed on them. Nigeria was the world's largest importer of rice in just the middle two years of that regime. Of course the Army decided to push them out. The people who planned the coup; Bako, Abacha, Taiwo, Idiagbon, IBB, . The man who they made HoS because of Integrity was Buhari. Buhari balanced budgets, restricted imports, and we were paying our loans off (the ones we could verify). We had paid off 3/4 of loans off when IBB pre emptively struck before he was retired as C of Army Staff. Nigeria was completely ruined morally, socially, evon9mically and socially by IBB. You are still suffering part of IBB damage to Nigeria even now although you probably don't know it. 4 Likes 3 Shares |
