The MV Nyerere ferry that operates between Bugorola and Ukara Island on the Lake Victoria sunk yesterday on Thursday 20th September on its way to Ukara at around 2 pm in the afternoon.

The number of casualties has reached 94 with 44 bodies found yesterday before rescue teams stopped due to darkness and resumed today. 40 people are in critical condition.

The Technical and Electrical Agency (TEMESA) Manager, Hassan Karonda confirmed the occurrence of the accident saying the cause will be announced after investigations.

MV Nyerere ferry was purchased and started working in 2004. It was given two new engines worth 191 million in July 2018. It is capable of carrying 25 tons as well as 100 passengers and 3 cars at the same time but it is said to have carried more than 400 passengers according to the District Commissioner.
