WHY ARE BEROM WOMEN AGAINST THE ARMY FINDING A MISSING GENERAL? Cham Faliya Sharon @ Two national dailies, specifically THE NATION and DAILY TRUST, today carried a story with pictures of over 500 Berom women dressed in black, protesting against a detachment of soldiers sent to search for an Army General that has been missing since September 3, 2018! Major General Mohammed Idris Alkali (rtd) was reported to have vanished into thin air with his car around Dura Du, a Berom community, in Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State while on a trip from Abuja. Investigations by the military was said to have shown that the General might have been killed and his body and car dumped in a pond in that community. And just as every military will do all over the world, they deployed men and search equipments to that pond to search for the body of the General and his car! However, after they installed their military gear and began draining the pond, the women came out and began throwing stones and other objects at the soldiers in protest against the search and rescue effort of the military for their missing General. The women claimed their protest was hinged on two reasons: 1. That the pond is their only source of water, which was quickly contradicted by the fact that there are over 30 other water points in that very community! 2. That if that particular pond is tampered with by the soldiers, there will be series of mysterious deaths and other calamities in their community! Superstition! Reason number one has already been contradicted, and reason number two is also very untenable because that community is a Christian community that shouldn't be beholden to any such primitive superstitious belief. Of course, every community in the Middle Belt region is a Christian community; that's what the world has been made to know, especially since clashes between farmers and "Fulani Herdsmen" began in the region. And even if we should pretend to believe this barefaced superstition, why should the military and the entire country be held to ransom over this superstition so much that the search for a missing General should not be held in a place he is believed could be found because of some puerile and primitive superstition? At what point in human development history did superstition take preeminence over human life, so much that a community will seek to use it as a basis to blackmail a nation not to search for a missing person? Or at what point in human development history did superstition become a replacement or substitute for common laws and basic rules of decency, so much that a nation's laws can be jettisoned at the whims and superstitions of some community that is just a subset of a sovereign nation? If regards will be given to some cooked up superstitions (or even real superstitions), then security forces all over the world will not bulldoze their ways into both friendly and unfriendly territories to search for abducted persons or to hunt down and kill terrorists because of certain superstitious beliefs held by those communities or nations! The military cannot be held or hampered by so called superstitions that are as useless as bloodthirsty criminals who commit crimes and expect a gullible community to protect them with superstitions! Well, it is excellent that the military defied those protesting women. And it is so cowardly for a community to put its women at the front as a tool to provoke the military! If there is any useless superstition worth defending by any community, is it the women of the community that should fight to defend the worthless superstition? Where are the men? And if it is true that that General was ambushed and killed in that community, was it the women who ambushed and killed him? Why are they hiding behind their women, and why are the women even allowing themselves to be used in such despicable manner? The military should just go ahead and search for their missing General, and if they find him they should quietly take him and leave peacefully. They should kindly avoid falling into the trap of those who are determined to keep stiring all manner of conflicts just to perpetually keep Nigeria on edge!

But the general's body has already been discovered at a different location since Monday 17th sept. Am I missing something.?? And why didn't they simply get scuba divers to investigate, instead of draining a whole pond? It is this type of irrational approach to problem solving that has prevented the army from defeating a ragtag Boko haram. And BTW, there is no report of who & why he was killed. Stop spreading your fake, personal ethnocentric deductions on social media 1 Like
