For perspective, solution was built using JDK 15, Tomcat 9.x, MySQL 5.7 or MariaDB 10.6 all running on Linux or Windows Server. Frontend is using Angular. Backend is fully exposed via APIs. Solution is used in Nigeria by a number of these "superstar" Fintechs as payment gateway or as a digital banking solution.

You should really exercise some restraints about rushing to call people quacks though. Seek first to understand peoples positions.

One of the prominent devs is a Google Germany employee. He contributes to the solution in his spare time and not as a Google employee. Demo instance is graciously hosted for free by Google (he had been single handedly paying for hosting the demo instance prior to that). Solution is one of several Apache Foundation FLOSS software.

There's a South American startup that has taken the software and added more functionality to cater for the specific needs of African Fintechs. They have a handful of devs and support staff in Kenya and Nigeria. Same solution was taken up by a Dutch company to provide financial services in Kenya. Also employ devs and support staff in Kenya.

Rushing to call me a quack is akin to calling someone a quack because they said you can get enterprise grade RDBMS for zero cost. MySQL and Postgres are both enterprise grade RDBMS that are a download away. Obviously there are costs to have that software running on servers accessible across the world. PHP can be used BUT there are much better suitable (purpose built) languages for such. It's all about using the RIGHT tool for the RIGHT task.

A times, it's equally about using the Tool you know best (even if it isn't specifically built for such).

Makes no sense trying to write a system program using RUST or GO when you know very little of them BUT very good at Python or C.

See there are several factors that goes into a choice of language. You can even mix (use more than 1) languages if you know what you doing.

I wouldn't buy a phone whose parts are hard to find. In other words, you wouldn't want to use a language whose available developers are very scare else such project gets very expensive.

You can't compare ease and affordability of PHP developers to some other Languages.

It even would cost you more getting a Drupal developer than a Joomla or WordPress developer

...and PHP is popular for so many reasons. And most people who speaks ill about PHP either have no direct encounter with the language or are propagating things they read or heard online.

PHP isn't perfect (just like many others) but have been redefined from what it used to be especially from PHP 7 and above.

IF you understand the history and humble beginnings of PHP, (just like WordPress), you would understand for it to still remain popular means lots of work have gone into it.

Same way some of Us started as way lower than where we currently are. Even Dangote, we heard started as a cloth trader. Even the Cement he manufactures today, He once was just a seller.

Neither PHP, nor WordPress are currently being used as only what they originally were inVented for BUT overtime, they have transformed into what We know them as today. Payment gateway is not that hard to setup, it’s just the licensing part that makes it hard, because you rely heavily on payment settlers, and some inter payment infrastructure, which on your own, you cannot achieve. So do your research, more on the required licenses and payment authorizations

Php can handle this task, no doubt, but there are better technologies available, that can perform this task better, even to scaling. It’s only old Nigerian programmers that keeps peddling php. Try new tech stacks
