INDICATIONS emerged, yesterday, in Geneva,
Switzerland, of a looming showdown between
organised labour and the Federal Government over the September deadline for the commencement of the new minimum wage.

While organised labour, as represented by Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, insisted that September deadline was sacrosanct, the Federal Government said it was not realizable.

Addressing the 107th Session of the International Labour Conference, ILC, in Geneva, President of NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, said the ongoing process on the new wage must be concluded and implementation begins in September as earlier agreed.

Defending this position while speaking to
journalists at the conference, Wabba said: “I have told you that at the tripartite committee, we all committed to a timetable and timeline which is known and everybody is aware of it.

But speaking to journalists, Minister of Labour
and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, insisted
September deadline was not possible, noting that
the Minimum Wage Tripartite Committee, working on it would only complete its work on or
September and submit to the government.

He said: “The truth of the matter is that there is a
work programme for the minimum wage
committee. And by that schedule of work, we are
supposed to terminate our own work in that
committee first week of September. After you have
done that, you will now take your recommendation to government.
“After doing that, the executive arm of government will take your recommendation to the Federal Executive Council because it concerns those in states, people in the state will now take it to National Economic Council, which is the council in charge of the economy of Nigeria.

“So these bodies will then look at the
recommendation and then forward the final
distillate to the National Assembly. It is the
National Assembly that has power to make laws.
But we can forward to them as executive bills. That is what the constitution says. So, I do not see all these taking place in September. That was why I said the date of September for a worker to receive new minimum wage is not feasible.”

The minister however, expressed optimism that if
the process was fast tracked before the end of the
year, the new wage would be implemented by 2019, adding “That is not to say if everyone puts in their best and we put it on a fast track, we cannot consummate it before the end of the year.

And when we consummate it before the end of the year, it has to be budgeted for. So, the money will go in either as supplementary budget or 2019 budget.”

Too much grammar backed by hazy logic.

When is that strike commencing please?

Everyone should take advantage of this electioneering atmosphere to meet all their lawful needs.
The money is ours.

#God bless Nigeria.

Enough of this govt complain,
Nigeria has money to pay Its citizens If only our corrupt politicians will.
Check out all politicians accts, it keeps enlarging daily especially state Governors who will keep complaining of no funds to pay workers But has Enough to even sponsor an Election in another State while workers will starve to death.

50000 is even too small for a Family Man nor an aspiring young Man.

The Federal Government said the Tripartite Committee on the National Minimum Wage would conclude its negotiation before the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress.

The organised labour had on Sept. 12 issued a 14-day ultimatum that would expire on Sept. 25 to the Federal Government for the committee to reconvene and complete it assignment.

Labour also said it would commence nationwide strike immediately after the expiration of its 14 days ultimatum if their demand was not met.

Ms Amal Pepple, Chairman of the committee gave the assurance while speaking in Abuja yesterday.

The strike must start immediately as long as labour will not compromise like the ones before them. There is money in Nigeria being stolen by the politicians, especially the governors.

I doubt, because they use the poor masses to enrich themselves in the name of fighting for workers. We are waiting and watching.

Chris Ngige should not compromise with the federal government of Nigeria. they promised is September and this is September and nothing has been done about it. Nigeria is fill with civil servant everywhere and this minimum wage should be increased to help the parent to Carter for their children, send them to best schools, accommodate them and feed them well. we can't wait for the federal government to do all these for us.. so the civil servant are the grassroots where these money should be disbursed to enable parents maintain their homes. by so doing, it will reduce poverty, crime, and all kinds of social vices. This government should tackle this as one of their major thrust.... and Nigerians will accolade them. Chris Ngige shouldn't compromise.
thank you.

Increasing the minimum wage to such an incredible amount requires a lot of deliberation, considering the inescapable impact of such actions on the economy.

In 2011 Gej Increased it from 7500 to 18,000
We shouldn't compare with the almost 50k new Wage.

Also the FG must ensure all institutions are ready to comply.
do u know d word inflation,18k den is more Dan 50k now,how much was rice, fuel melon grow up

If FG increases minimum wage now IPOB,PDP,Reno n FFK will say that it is because of 2019 election n if it doesn't increase minimum wage they will still say that," the APC led government is insensitive to the plight of the workers"

What exactly do these people want?
