In recent times, the Super Eagles have thrown the door open to players who are eligible to play for the national team.
Despite being blessed with home-grown talents, the authorities still prefer to depend on players plying their trade overseas.
In the past few years, the three African champions have handed call-ups to stars doing well in Europe, particularly in England.
Here are four players who left England to play for Nigeria
1. Victor Moses
Now retired, the Chelsea star has played for England's U-15's, U-17's, U-19's and the U-21's but was invited to play for Nigeria under the tutelage of late Stephen Keshi in 2012.
The 27-year-old went on to win the 2013 Nations Cup and made two World Cup appearances for the Super Eagles winning 37 caps in total.
2. Alex Iwobi
Nephew of former Super Eagles captain Austin Okocha, was handed an invite by late coach Shuaibu Amodu in 2015 and have made 21 appearance scoring five goals.
The Arsenal winger played for England at the U-16, U-17 and the U-18 levels but the 22-year-old is now an important member of the Nigerian squad.
3. Ola Aina
Though Aina was left out of the Super Eagles team to the Russia 2018 World Cup, he has created competition in the left-back position in the national team.
The Chelsea youngster who is currently on loan with Serie A side Torino has played for England's U-16, U-17, U-18, U-19 and U-20.
4. Semi Ajayi
The 24-year-old made his debut for Nigeria in Super Eagles' 2019 Afcon qualifiers against Seychelles early this month.
Ajayi has played all his career for English sides including; Charlton, Dartford, Arsenal, Cardiff City., Wimbledon, Crewe Alexander and Rotherham United.
