The Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has charged Nigerians to be committed to the common course of national unity even as the nation celebrates her 58th year of independence. He made this call on Monday morning during the commemoration of Nigerian Independence Day which took place at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Arcade, Akure, Ondo State.

Speaking at the event, Akeredolu observed that although the current problems facing the Nigeria may appear to be critical, with concerted effort, the nation still had prospects of remaining together.

“The current challenges, either contrived or consequent upon the facts of internal contradictions inherent in a transitional society, make the aspirations for a united, progressive and prosperous country appear utopian.

“It is, however, achievable, if all of us will be committed to the purpose of ultimate mobilization of our people towards realizing this lofty aim” He said.

The Governor who also noted that the leadership of the nation must be willing to provide the necessary direction for this goal to be achieved further commended the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, for the courageous steps he has taken, so far, towards the implementation of economic policies that would enable Nigeria to attain self-reliance.

While commending Ondo State indigenes for the support they have shown his administration over the past few months in office, Arakunrin Akeredolu restated that his government would not be distracted by the dynamics of party politics.

“Politics, to us, is a call to service. We will continue to ensure that we give our best at all times. Our people deserve quality representation.

“Our administration views the issue of self-reliance very seriously. The people are beginning to appreciate the guiding principle upon which the Government operates. We must be ready to invest, heavily, in human development.”

On the issues of security and electoral malpractice which had bedeviled the country before now, Akeredolu highlighted that under the current leadership, Nigeria has made significant progress. He noted that the votes of Nigerians are beginning to count and also encouraged politicians aspiring for offices come 2019 to do their best to ensure a free and fair election.

The Ondo State Governor finally stressed that the Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress would always be willing to support any decision taken by the party’s National Executive Council. This, he concluded, would ensure continued progress of the APC.

The commemoration event which featured dance presentations and match past by Students and Security Agencies also had in attendance the First Lady of Ondo State, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the Deputy Governor, Alfred Agboola Ajayi, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. David Oleyelogun, heads of security agencies and other members of the State Executive Council.
