@OP: Your heading is misleading; if you read carefully you would have noticed that the senator did not withdraw as such but was instead abstaining.
He was clearly not recognising the (state party organised) exercise, which he regarded as illegal; but instead banking on his earlier declared direct ticket as announced by the NWC - which he regarded as more superior and legitimate.
