Jimmy Sho Shomuji:
Ladies and Gentlemen, I welcome you to this auspicious occasion of the inauguration of the board of trustees of the Reformation movement of Nigeria and I thank you for being here.

Several years ago, a group of young men and women came together under the auspices of the students’ union movement to protect and defend the right of students on campus with an uninterrupted ideology, passion and discipline. Little did they know that the fire and passion they carried in their bones through the years would one day lead to the formation of a movement that has come to be known as the Reformation Movement of Nigeria.

This movement is clearly an idea whose time has come especially at a period when our country continues to navigate through the waters of uncertainty and a misty and foggy political, economic and social atmosphere.

It is no longer news that our nation today has a population of 198m people with over 60% of these being youth. Sadly, while making up over 60% of the population the Nigerian Youth has not found significant platforms to acquire, develop and express their leadership skills outside of the student union movement; which in many cases has become an extension of the school management and has been generally ineffective as it has also been subjected to corruption.

The reality today is that we have a nation where the minority lead the majority and the majority has little or no say in determining their own destiny. It is for this 120 million young men and women that today marks a turning point in our history.

The Reformation Movement of Nigeria is a socio-ideological group made up of passionate youth who will be a catalyst in mobilising other young Nigerians towards unity, cooperation, development, rule of law, employment, law and order, justice, integration, peace, security, stability and a general well-being.

While commending this great initiative, I must sound a note of caution from the outset. You must be guided and governed by conviction. All ideologies that impact the human race greatly are driven by conviction…that dogged determination to pursue one’s beliefs to a logical conclusion and leave a legacy that can be embraced by generations to come.

I share in your passion to raise patriotic, selfless and passionate; Leaders who have integrity, are accountability and have a fervent love for humanity strongly embedded in their DNA. Leaders who will commit themselves to serving and empowering the people so that each one can be proud of being a citizen of this great country.

Leaders who will be committed to using the vast resources of this country to improve the lives of the people and not corner these same resources to feed their own greed.

Leaders who combine knowledge, competence, skill and ability to achieve results. Leaders who not only have a vision, but can communicate that vision to Nigerians in a way to get their buy-in and partnership.

Leaders who will walk the talk. Mere talk is cheap but talk, backed by focused and committed actions, gets the attention of even the worst critics. I look forward to seeing such leaders emerge from this group.

I urge you to pay particular attention to the ideas you have crafted as your mission, vision and value statements, for this is what you will be held accountable for.

I also encourage you to be open to and embrace collaboration, stakeholder engagement, synergy, as sustainable strategies for the achievement of your vision.

I wish you the very best in your endeavours and look forward to sharing my thoughts and expertise with you as we work together to actualise the goals of this organisation.
