The Man Atiku VS The Man Buhari by zinosleek(m): 4:05pm On Oct 10, 2018
In respect to the just concluded primaries across Nigeria, we have seen all the presidential candidates of various political parties. But we all know who the two front-runners are in the sphere of politics in this country.
When it comes to political parties and the personalities involved in the presidential race, no one can deny that the battle is between the incumbent, Mohammed Buhari of APC and Abubakar Atiku of PDP.
These two can be regarded as serial contestants for the presidency of this country and permit me to say, both hold a record of the number of times anyone has contested for the seat of president in Nigeria.
Nevertheless, every election posses a different scenario that may give any man advantage over another, just like the scenario of 2015 presented Buhari the opportunity to defeat Goodluck Jonathan.
Fast forward to 2018 and the ball game is a lot different and a new hero and Villan had presented themselves to Nigerians. Let's first take a look at 2015, both Atiku and Buhari were perceived as the new hero to usher the change mantra after being the lead villains for so many years before 2015. The top political figurehead was backing the APC these two who were once scorned at, were applauded for bringing the change Nigeria seems to have needed at that time. This is because everyone against the new villain in the person of Goodluck Jonathan was praised as the new National hero.
These characters headline the movie poster to wrestle power from the PDP and they succeeded. Well, now in 2018, different scenery in the country had presented a new hero and a new villain.
Abubakar Atiku seems to be the new poster hit for the new thriller with his convincing victory in the just concluded PDP primary. And now all those who accused him of being unworthy and called him unprintable names are now flocking with him.
But let's dwell on the situation in the country that now present Atiku the opportunity to become the next President of Nigeria.
1. The economy of the country is in a state of comatose, and Nigerians need someone with knowledge of modern day business. That is one area in which Atiku can hold away against Buhari. Call him corrupt, or whatever name fancies your adjectives for him, he is an astute businessman and an employer of labors. If he can bring in that business acumen of his, working with the right people, then Nigeria economy can have a lifeline.
2. Atiku can foster a good sense of national belonging in a country where some regions are feeling marginalized regarding political appointments and lack any sense of belonging. Atiku is known to have cordial working relationships with people of all regions in the country. Putting it in a nutshell, the various regions will trust Atiku to run a government of inclusion than president Buhari.
3. It seems PDP learned more from 2015 than APC in the conduct of their primaries. In 2015, most people made their choice to vote in APC when they conducted a free and fair primary for the whole world to see without imposing a candidate. In 2018, the reverse is the case, as the APC seems to fail in credibility in conducting primaries all over the country. And it seems like President Buhari was imposed on the party without a candidate. It shows desperation and lack of trust in the party machinery.
4. And as an incumbent, your failure is right before everyone, compared to the one that has not been tested. Now we all know what it felt like to be Goodluck Jonathan.
The race to the Presidency is still far off for a lot of variables to take place. But one thing is clear, Nigerians have the options in front of them, even if you don't like all the options presented to you.
