*LASU'S PERSISTENCE ON REFORMS AND THE CHALLENGE IN FRONT OF US*

With wild jubilation, I reacted to the news of the dismissal of three randy LASU lecturers for sexually harassing our female students on campus. The three Lecturers : Dr. Sunkanmi Odubunmi, Dr. Isiaka Ogunwande, and Dr. Emmanuel Gbeleyi were all shown the exit door following proven allegations of sexual harassment. The most despicable and heinous of them all is Dr. Emmanuel Gbeleyi who was a Lecturer at the Department of Anatomy. Dr. Gbeleyi injected female students, sedated them in the laboratory before having sexual intercourse with them. While transiting to medical school, a senior colleague in Physiology who was then in her penultimate year once warned me about the antics of Dr. Gbeleyi. I initially doubted the veracity of her claims as they appeared so evil but she was eventually proven right. I strongly believe that all well-meaning Nigerians must call for the arrest and prosecution of Dr. Gbeleyi. What he did is criminal, devilish and totally unacceptable.

In the midst of all these, I must salute the courage and resoluteness of Professor Lanre Fagbohun, SAN, the Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University. I've watched him(Prof. Fagbohun) speak so many times and each time I come in contact with him or even watch him from afar - I see a hardboiled man with unwavering integrity and love for discipline and the rule of law.

On the other hand, it is so interesting and quite revealing that since the dismissal of these three Lecturers, not even a whisper of words of condemnation have emanated from ASUU - LASU Exco. This is the same group of few individuals who always inundate the media with concocted stories whenever they want to blackmail the LASU VC to stop prosecuting the bad eggs in LASU like Dr. Gbeleyi. ASUU - LASU Exco is the only union 'leaders' in LASU that have never supported the clear and well-meaning reforms of the current administration in LASU. The reasons for this are not farfetched. Virtually all those leading the pack for ASUU - LASU Exco has all been enmeshed in the quagmire of sexual harassment and other forms of illegality. Dr. Johnson Oluwole Ayodele, a Lecturer at the Department of Sociology and an ASUU - LASU stalwart was recently caught trying to rape a female student in a hotel room in Lagos. Dr. Afisi and Dr. Oyekan - who is the Assistant General Secretary of ASUU - LASU are both renowned for their addicted stance on sex for grades in the faculty of arts. If these individuals with soiled hands and dirty legs are the ones leading ASUU - LASU Executive, then how do we expect them to condemn the sack of their accomplices or support the reforms of the current administration in LASU? We cannot expect harmful ants to applaud the good works of insecticides.

There is indeed more work to do in LASU and Nigeria at large. There are still a handful of other bad eggs in the system who have chosen to molest our female students and exploit our male colleagues. All over Nigeria, they are dotted across our laboratories, faculties, and offices. To eradicate this ugly occurrence, all students in LASU must begin to speak out so that we can jointly expose the bad eggs and flush them out of our beloved LASU. LASUITES must equally be fearless in reporting illegalities. We also know that corruption will want to stage a fightback through cheap blackmail and self-serving machinations. This is why all LASUITES, Alumni members, Staff, and well-meaning Nigerians must stand by the current administration's reforms in LASU.
The struggle to change the Nigerian narrative must start from our universities.

We are LASU, We are truly Proud!

I wish other VCs can emulate this too instead of pretending that these things don't exist on campuses undecided

It's so criminal. The worse part is that ASUU has refused to condemn the actions of his members. In fact, they are even saying the VC should not prosecute these bag eggs. Things happen in our universities.

ASUU are the ones supporting the bad lecturers in LASU and beyond and that's because most of these bad Lecturers are ASUU leaders themselves. The Secretary of ASUU - LASU has been caught many times in the act of forcefully "smotching" female students by students in his office. Another thing is that female students are always scared to speak out and that's a major problem in solving the entire problem.

For merely sacking these criminals, ASUU - LASU Exco has been blackmailing the LASU VC with all sort of things like press statements where they dish out lies to the public. The good thing is that : 99% of staff and students are behind the man and his reforms. More of the bad eggs will soon be flushed out.
