In other ports, it would take a few hours to discharge oversized cargo, while in Nigeria, it would take days because the operators lacked the equipment and the customer would wait for days for them to hire equipment to operate such cargo, the NSC executive director  pointed out.

This is what many years of lawlessness has led us to.
Gradually, we will get there.

Really ?

Advice your people first to stop smuggling Arms, Drugs and other illegal items. No amount of money will make us compromise our security, let them go period. Customs carry on with the thorough checking

Lol shocked They want to ship goods through Ghana port? The cost will skyrocket after clearing cos of high tariff in Ghana.

Naija goods and services are too cheap hence drop in quality of both. And any attempt to increase will make them unaffordable due to low purchasing power of the citizenry as a result of poor economic management of all our government from time immemorial.

Everything is just so wrong with this country as a results of the thickheads running the system.

The case with Nigerian ports is pathetic.

They are handling fewer volumes than before but are taking longer time to do so. This is a huge cost to the consuming public as port delays lead to higher charges and will be ultimately paid for by the consuming public.

It takes between 24 and 72 hours to clear cargoes in Cotonou and Lome. There they measure in hours, like any other good port in the world. In Nigeria, we measure in weeks. it takes anything from 2 weeks to 7 weeks (or 7 weeks plus) to clear goods in Nigeria.

It is one of the worst port records in the world!

I wonder how our government has looked away from what is considered the gateway to the economy.

The delay starts with the ports who will take 2-3 days to stack the full containers.

The shipping companies have grown wings in this regime. They will take anything from 3-7 days just to create invoices. They make demurrage income by causing these delays. They sometimes put wrong details in their records and make you pay for it, in the form of amendment costs, which can also cause another 3 days.

Then you go to wait for another invoice from the terminals. And the story goes on!

Some of the invoices are created in India (by outsourcing) and they can tell you there is nothing they can do to hasten the process.

Meanwhile, our government agencies look away. They are also too interested in making their own incomes and have less interest in the process.

Then delay with Customs, delay with SON and so on. When you finish with all the bottlenecks in the ports you now face the Apapa transport gridlock that has now lasted more than 5 whole years. We are such an unserious bunch of people!

The last time anyone tried to change the system was when Okonjo Iweala forced several changes. Since then the lackadaisical approach has returned.

The government needs real professionals to sit and review the process. Their fraternal approach of employing incompetent townsmen has not solved the problem. Shipper's Council is seen to be ineffective.

Our ports can earn as good as crude oil if we do our homework. Dubai and Singapore economies became world economies because of their ports. New York Port is so rich that it owns a lot of the posh properties in Manhattan.

When are we going to wake from this slumber, or is it a coma? Even Niger is now sidelining us!

Wake up, Nigeria.

i agree with u concerning the issue of the time spent in handling cargo in Nigerian port, I think the delay is always done on purpose in order to ensure demurrage after nine days of arrival of the consignment now tell me how do you expect a serious minded business person to relate with such time wasting deal port operstors should be held responsible including d agencies at the port, on the issue of rail etc all I have to say is what do u expect from series of unserious govt both past n present we have been having even the ones we consider serious would face on part of the economy n leave other parts to rot away no maintenance no upgrade but na their problem at the end of the day cos with this attitude u loose money and trade partners n the citizens would hold d govt responsible

Dont blame this regime. Its the attitude of Niggerians generally. Can you name one sector where people act profeasionally and carry out their duties efficiently. You have offices where work is waiting but people prefer to come to work, gist and go home. In fact there is nothing you look for that people wont try to frustrate your efforts

Graham!

So dem nor like Kaduna dry port then?

Otuawulaeji!

You were almost getting at the cause of the problem.

Yes, the cause of this problem is the establishment of dry port in Nigeria at the expense of the natural sea. So with less funds going to the sea port apart from Lagos port, pirate took over these ports and turn it to an haven for crimes.

Because of political exigencies, many of our political leader started establishing DRY PORT in places that should not have gotten a port in the first place.

Go all over the world, ports are always connected with were there is massive water or ocean.

Be it the port of Rottadam ( Holland ) Anterwep ( Belgium ) Singapore (Asia ) Hong Kong ( Asia ) etc.

But Nigeria leaders especially those that of northern extraction ( northern leaders ) decides to throw caution to the wind by setting up DRY PORT in places that has no natural environment for sea port activities such as the Kaduna port.

This they use it to drain the resources of the country.

Because of the huge bill of the federal government coupled with corruption they can not maintain the existing natural sea port like the once in ( warri and koko port ) Delta state, onne ports ( rivers state) Calabar ports, Ondo port etc.

Even the more recent Bayelsa sea port is being strangulated due to lack of funds from the government.

If the Warri port and Onne port is well developed and with a railway line extending from Niger delta to Northern Nigeria the Warri port can provide support to Niger republic.

But everything in Nigeria is POLITICIZED or look out from ethnic and religious interest not minding the havoc and pains it is causing in Nigeria.

IF GOD NO GIVE YOU RIVER MUST YOU BREAK ROCK TO GET RIVER BY FORCE!

This is pretty sad considering Nigeria has been trying to get these guys to patronise our ports since 2013. The issues listed here are half red tape and half infrastructure. Nigeria could fix the bureaucracy with automation and tech.

The infrastructure is the rail lines they're planning to build. The still need to implement port reforms. We can't have bad service and expensive ports.

Front page: Lalasticlala
So they should patronize you with your shabby attitude. I think Niggerians have not yet understood the concept of cause and effect. You give poor services, evryone leaves. no one is obligated to patronize you

It doesn't take anything to make certain things work. What will it take Nigerian government to go into public-private port initiative?, as poor as Malawi, it has 4 ports, a country with less than 50 million population.
