Towards the ending of September, Facebook announced that hackers have accessed the accounts of over 50 million users. Out of the 50 million users whose accounts were breached, 30 million were later confirmed to be the ones whose access tokens were stolen.

According to reports, the usernames and passwords of users weren’t stolen by the hackers; what were stolen were users’ personal data, such as name, contact information, demographic details, hometown, birthdate, and details of other friends.

So, to be seen as transparent and to help the affected users be aware of their vulnerability, Facebook has revealed a way that all the users of the social network can know if their accounts were among the hacked. Here is how to check if your Facebook account was hacked in the recent data breach.

How to Know If Your Facebook Account Was Hacked

* Login to your Facebook account and navigate to the Facebook Help Center

* On the Help Center, scroll down to the bottom until you see the section named “Is my Facebook account impacted by this security issue.”

* On getting to that section, Facebook will tell you Yes or No.

If the answer is Yes on your account, it means you are a victim of the recent hack. Facebook would then tell you the particular information that the hackers stole from your account. The people affected by the hack have been categorized into three. The first category of people are the people their name and contact information were stolen. You shouldn’t worry much if Facebook says you are among this category.

As for the second category, aside from their names and contact information, other personal details such as their username, gender, locale/language, relationship status, religion, hometown, self-reported current city, birthdate, device types used to access Facebook, education, work, the last 10 places they checked into or were tagged in, website, people or Pages they follow, and the 15 most recent searches were stolen. If you are into this group, keep a tab on your financial and banking transactions to ensure a third-party does not access them.


No information was obtained from the third category of people, so you should be happy if your account was hacked but you fall into this category.
