Africa Remains Poor Because Of Nigeria, Ex-kenya Anti-corruption Chief Says by olametrix(m): 12:07pm On Oct 18, 2018 |
The African continent has lagged behind in most facets of human development because its largest country, Nigeria, has remained in poverty due to fraudulent activities in public service, a leading anti-corruption campaigner said on Tuesday. Patrick Lumumba, a former Director of Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission, said Nigerian leaders must do everything within their capacity to address endemic graft. This, he said, would refocus Africa on the path towards prosperity. “Africa is behind because Nigeria has not realized her potential. It’s time the leaders rise up because one in every five Africans is a Nigerian.” Mr. Lumumba spoke at the two-day anti-corruption summit which began this Tuesday at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre in Abuja. The program is put together by the National Assembly under the leadership of Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker Yakubu Dogara. Mr. Lumumba, during the keynote speech, said it is time for Nigeria, and Africa as a whole, to abandon the culture of “punishing small thieves and electing big ones.” Mr. Lumumba, a professor of law, said Nigeria is a microcosm of Africa and, as such, cannot afford to keep getting it wrong. “Behavioural change culture must be instilled in Nigeria,” Mr. Lumumba said. He said Nigeria must put in place stringent mechanism that would effectively caution against corruption. The three arms of government must strengthen and not undermine the institutions that are meant to fight corruption so that Nigeria can realise its potential, Mr. Lumumba said. “People must be made to know that if you reap where you have not sown there are consequences. Men only change their behaviours when there is a threat pain.” The don called for a wholesome support for President Muhammadu Buhari in his war against corruption, especially on the need to build lasting institutions. “Institutions are the heart of the fight against corruption but he will not succeed if the legislature is not behind him and the institutions are not strengthened. “Because only institutions defy time and outlive those that live on graft. Mr. Saraki, in his opening remarks, said Nigeria had failed to seriously fight against corruption for more than 40 years. He said the National Assembly will work to partner with the Buhari administration for lasting solutions to the menace. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/213023-africa-remains-poor-nigeria-ex-kenya-anti-corruption-chief-says.html

Very correct. The rest of the world are facing unnecessary problems all because of a lifeless continent called Africa. Earth would have been a perfect planet without Africa in it. We're a black race with an analog mindset still living in a dark civilization. We're carried away with religion, tribalism and pseudo-politics. We hate facing reality despite living in a natural world. We derive pleasure in abusing nature with spiritual and supernatural concept. Without mincing word, we're inferior!!! The North keeps drawing Nigeria backward. Nigeria keeps drawing Africa backward. Africa keeps drawing the rest of the world backward. Even earth sef is stylishly drawing other planets backward. If not, can anyone tell me why Mars is not inhabited with aliens by now? Ever since scientists started exploring the innocent planet, we don dey use our bad luck dey affect the red planet. Shame on human race. Our humanity is an hybrid form of selfishness and greediness. We only care about ourselves. We're too homocentric for my liking. We kill animals with joy but resurrect our conscience when our fellow humans are killed. I regret being a human. I prefer being an alien, robot or a gaming character instead. 1 Like |

Although the law provides criminal penalties for conviction of official corruption, the government did not implement the law effectively, and officials frequently engaged in corrupt practices with impunity. Massive, widespread, and pervasive corruption affected all levels of government and the security services,” it said. |

baliyubla: Inasmuch as I dislike Buhari's way of leadership, he is still not the pioneering source of our problems. The truth is that what is limiting us is inside of us. Our brain (hardware component) is faulty. Our mind (the intelligent software) is outdated. There's a way we've been programmed that is making us to move backward while the rest of the modern world are heading forward. How many Nigerians have a dream? All we care about is making a living. An extravagant one for that matter. All in a bid to showoff and intimidate our fellow citizens. How many Nigerians prioritize his/her country first? We live in a country where citizens take their faith, tribe and religion above their country. To be candid, no country develop that way. How many Nigerian choose science and technology as their way of life? How many of us loves being knowledgeable or being a genius? How many of us practice human creativity and innovation? We live in a country where thousands of graduates are produced per annum. Many of which are certified scientist without any practical application of those scientific knowledge. We complain about bad roads and basic infrastructures and social amenities. Is it bad road that's preventing our computer science graduates to be productive in software design & development? How many compiler, browser, IDE, Programming language, Framework, 3D engine etc were written by any Nigerian software developer? All they care about is working for client and making an ends meet. No dream! No future ambition! Yet, we want to become a superpower country. The USA was developed by well-meaning citizens that doesn't clamour for Paradise with sheer cowardice and docility. They made protest when needs be without minding loosing their lives. They agitated for freedom and positive change when need arrives. They always take their country first above Jesus and Mohammed. Their culture (heritage) comes second. They were young guys that so much love their country to the extent that they couldn't wait to graduate from college before kick starting their dreams and visions. They were not too young to start a Tech company as a teenager. They were not too poor to start one from a garage. They faced similar challenges like every business owner faced throughout the world. They were not too tired to complain. They were not too shortsighted to quit. They proved their dreams to the world, defended what they believed in and in doing so, they collectively build the future they desire, the tomorrow they wanted to see and the country they want for their unborn generation. Once again, nothing is stopping us from progressing. We're our own greatest obstacle. Our own major limitation. Let's start having a dream, a clearer purpose for our lives, building tomorrow, falling in love with science and technology and making our country comes first in everything we do. - Solutionmee God bless Africa God bless Nigeria God bless all men of impacts But most especially, God bless all men with dreams out there |

kmcutez: The problem of Nigeria I think. It's only a Northern businessman that will travel all the way from Kaduna to Osun State to be cutting nails or repairing shoes. Once they realise the amount of money that can sustain them for that day, they're satisfied. That's not contentment. That's poverty shrinking mentality and backwardness. 2 Likes |
