Followers of the Nigerian political space are divided over what the recent travel ban on high profile Nigerians means for the country as it moves closer to 2019. While many immediately questioned the motive at this volatile period, it is not out of order to tow a line of reasoning, regardless of one’s political tendencies.

Many lawyers have come out to question President Buhari’s executive order as draconian and unconstitutional, that of course, implies that we should expect a battle Royale in the courts sometime in the near future.

However, from an economic view point, what lies in there for the common man, for investors and the growth of the economy?

Taking a historic precedence, countries have had to sometimes abandon individual rights and freedom enshrined in the constitution to fight a common enemy – corruption. It has taken countless executions, and imprisonment to bring China and other Asian tigers to achieve a clean slate. When there are laws meant to protect the masses from greed, it becomes a tool by the powerful to oppress the poor by milking dry the commonwealth.

On the other hand, the divisive political tendencies is also evident and scary to say the least. It inadvertently brings the “we” against “them” syndrome to the fore. In essence, the fight could take on a political configuring.

Without pragmatic efforts to keep liquidity steady, through intermittent Central Bank intervention, capital flight resulting from the ban on notable Nigerians can lead the country to another recession.

Political witchhunt causes shivers amongst investors. The necessary cash flow for investments necessary to drive the country’s GDP becomes stagnant. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had in the past resulted to freezing accounts of notable Nigerians and their accomplices. Businesses have had to come to a halt through this unbridled quest to lay hold on those the government refer to as criminals.

To bolster the staggering exchange rate, the country at this time needs active players and more of bargaining can be made for the common good rather than the strenuous, destructive efforts that gathers more enemies.
