The draw for the 2018 African Women's Nations Cup was done yesterday night in Ghana.

Nigeria was drawn in group B with South Africa, Zambia and Kenya. We play our first match against South Africa at the Cape Coast Stadium on November 18th.


Kenya replaced perennial cheats Equatorial Guinea who were banned by CAF for fielding an ineligible player. Equatorial Guinea have often been accused of fielding men and foreigners in their women's national team and this time they were banned for fielding a Cameroonian in their qualifying match against Kenya. The Kenyans protested and Equatorial Guinea was banned.




The tournament will be held in Ghana from 17 November to 1 December 2018.

Stars to watch out for.

1) Asisat Oshoala

Asisat Oshoala showed that she is ready for the AWCON by scoring a hat trick in the Chinese league two weeks ago and scoring another goal last week.

She helped Dalian to back to back titles in the Chinese Women's Super League in the 2017 and 2018 seasons. She was also the highest goal scorer in the 2017 season as Dalian won both the league and the cup.

Asisat Oshoala was the best player and highest goal scorer at the 2014 FIFA Under 20 World Cup. She was also the BBC Women's Player Of The Year 2015 and she is the reigning and 3 times African Women's Player Of The Year (2014, 2016 & 2017).


Asisat Oshoala obviously loves the AWCON. She was the best player and 2nd highest goal scorer at the 2014 AWCON (she scored 4 goals). She was also the highest goal scorer at the 2016 AWCON, scoring 6 goals as Nigeria successfully defended its title.


2) Desire Oparanozie

Nigerian hotshot and freekick specialist Desire Oparanozie was the highest goalscorer at the 2014 AWCON, scoring 5 goals as Nigeria won the championship. She might have repeated the feat in 2016, but she got injured during the tournament. She returned in the semi-final to score a stunning freekick goal that got Nigeria to the final and she then scored the goal that won the tournament for Nigeria as the Super Falcons defeated Cameroon 1-0 in the final. She also scored in the final of the 2014 edition.

The Super Falcons number 9 has also been in great form at club level and she has scored a lot of goals, including a spectacular long range shot, for her French club Guingamp.




3) Gaelle Enganamouit

The Lioness of Cameroon, Gaelle Deborah Enganamouit was the 2015 African Women's Player of the Year. She was also the highest goal scorer in the Swedish league in 2015. She is reputed to have scored the fastest goal in women's football history when she scored a goal just 2 seconds into a match in the Serbian League.

She suffered an injury in the first game of the 2016 Swedish league season that ruled her out for the rest of the season.

However, Cameroon hosted the 2016 AWCON and they were desperate to get their star striker fit for the tournament. Many people believe that the Cameroonians featured her before she was back to full fitness and she was a shadow of herself. She didn't score a single goal, but she was the perfect decoy for Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene as she always drew defenders away from Aboudi Onguene.

She moved to Dalian in the Chinese league in 2017 (Asisat Oshoala was her team mate), but she was plagued by injuries during her stay at Dalian.

She moved to Norway in 2018 where she finally found her scoring form again.

Enganamouit was one of the stars of the 2015 World Cup in Canada, scoring a hat trick in the 6-0 demolition of Ecuador. Canadians nicknamed her the "Freight Train" due to her power and pace.


4) Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene

Gabriel Aboudi Onguene was the best player at the 2016 AWCON as she helped Cameroon to get to the final of the competition. She also came second in the 2017 African Woman Player Of The Year awards.
