The Anambra State government has refuted reports that two persons from the Republic of Togo died in the recent collapsed building in the state.
The Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Emeka Ezenwanne, who made the clarification at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi where victims were receiving treatment, said the second Togolese rumoured to be among the dead was alive.

A 3-storey building under construction at Okpuno Otolo, Nnewi had on October 17, collapsed, with two deaths recorded while 11 others trapped in the building were rescued alive.
The commissioner regretted that the false death of the foreigner went viral on the social media, insisting that one of the victims was a Nigerian.

"He was seen on his bed but still groaning under severe pains along with some other survivors from the building collapse," he said.

Describing the incident as unfortunate, Ezenwanne, who visited the site of the collapsed building with his entourage, said the visit was to encourage the survivors.

He prayed for their quick recovery and pledged financial support for their treatment, just as he sympathised with relatives of the deceased.
The surviving Togolese, simply identified as Mr. Collins, thanked the commissioner for his visit and support.

The nurses on duty at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital, disclosed that seven other survivors, who sustained minor injuries had since been discharged after receiving treatment.
Two other survivors at the emergency unit receiving treatment, Samuel Chukwuemeka and Ebuka Dunu, sustained leg injuries multiple injuries on their hand, waist and legs.

Dunu, who was still groaning under severe pains, said the experience was traumatising.
Commenting on the incident, building experts from the Anambra State Ministry of Housing, Awka, Ikenna Okpala and Nweke Kingsley Obiora said that building collapse had become too frequent and worrisome in the state.

Okpala identified some of the causes of collapse to include, use of quacks by clients, badly set foundation, poor supervision, absence of good reinforcements and bad concrete mixing.
On his part, Obiora called on clients to employ only professional builders whose expertise would be relevant in all stages of the construction.
