TUESDAY LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT MESSAGE (05 07 2022) LIVE FROM DEEPER LIFE BIBLE CHURCH HEADQUARTERS, GBAGADA MESSAGE BY OUR FATHER IN THE LORD, PASTOR W F KUMUYI TOPIC: BITTERNESS OR BLESSEDNESS? CHOOSE GENESIS 49:5–7; 2 SAMUEL 2:26 Genesis 49:5-7 5. Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations. 6. O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall. 7. Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel. 2 Samuel 2:26 Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren? INTRODUCTION: Today, we come to a very important part of the Scriptures in Romans 15:4 "For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope". This tells us Ministers, workers, members of the Church and everyone who claims to belong to the Lord, that whatsoever was written in Genesis, Malachi, Matthew, Revelation, and in-between Genesis and Revelation, were written for our learning. So, as you come, you are here to learn, and you need to prepare your heart, empty your hearts of past notions, ideas, opinions and say "Speak Lord, because your servants are ready to learn". Already, we have read our text from verses 1 to 31, and we have seen our memory verse which is the utterance and declaration of Jacob where he made his observation known about what Simeon and Levi, the two brothers did. Jacob was coming to the end of his life, and he reflected on what his two sons did in avenging the defilement of their sister, Dinah. We have a choice whether to be bitter or blessed. We have the option to show the bitterness of anger or the blessedness of affection. We need to choose whether our lives will be that of fierceness or of forgiveness. There is always a choice to make. The message tonight is titled BITTERNESS OR BLESSEDNESS? CHOOSE. Whatever we do any moment of time, we should not think of the present consequences alone but the future also. In our actions and reactions when something that should not have happened happen, we choose whether to respond with grace, forgiveness and blessedness or with bitterness and anger. Let's check the way we have been acting, is it with bitterness and anger? How long are you going to kill those who offend you? Everything is all about choice. The message is divided into three parts. A. THE BITTERNESS OF ANGER AND REVENGE. Genesis 49:5–7 Remember the story, Dinah went to see the daughters of the land, there is another side to it, she went to be seen by the daughters of the land. Everything in life has two sides just like the coin. When we go about aimlessly in a new community, is it to see or to be seen? Obviously, Hamor and Shechem saw her. You will not only see, but they will see you and make demands of you. You have not thought well if you don't put in mind that people will see you, apart from you seeing them. We were told that Shechem, the prince of the land saw and took her. Obviously, from the story, it wasn't rape, she yielded herself and after the incident, she didn't come back home, she stayed there. It was after her brothers have destroyed the city that they brought her back. There is always a form of longing in an uncircumcised and unsanctified heart. Her brothers did not rebuke her, but they were indulgent. Her father too did not say anything, he and her mother were indulgent parents. There are also indulgent neighbours who will not allow parents to correct their children. This happens in the church too. They gang up against parents who want to be responsible and do the needful, afterwards, they will blame same parents when things go wrong with the children. So, we need to think and look at the future when parents are correcting their children. Simeon and Levi thought of nothing else to do than to show their anger at what happened to their sister. 1. THE DANGER AND DEFILEMENT OF AIMLESS WANDERS (Genesis 34:1-2; 1 Timothy 5:13,12; Proverbs 21:16; 7:11-12,25–27) There was no record that Dinah told her parents that she was going to see the daughters of the land. If she did, they would have told her that it was dangerous because she was too young. They would probably have assigned one of her brothers to go with her because two are better than one. But there was no evidence of her seeking permission. When Shechem took her, she didn't cry out. If a man finds a woman all alone and forcefully defiles her despite her cries, he will be held responsible for his actions. Dinah did not cry out because the experience was a pleasurable one for her. 1 Timothy 5:13 • And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. This text applies to Dinah, teenagers and adults alike. Some don't have anything tangible to spend their time for. Normally in our adult life, we must have goals we set for ourselves: goals for the week, month, quarter and year. So, when we start working from Mondays of every week, we have those goals in mind. Whether you are working in the office or on a business, you must check up every week to ensure that you are meeting your goals instead of roaming about from place to place. Roaming about today is not only on the streets, you can roam about on the internet with your phone searching this and surfing that. Some people even say that they got their friends and who they will marry on social media. Single people roam, married people roam and they sometimes get into trouble. They wander from house to house because they have cast off their first faith. At times you don't know how some people got your number and they start engaging you. If you value your life and ministry, you will learn to stay away from such people or outrightly block them (Proverbs 21:16) Anyone who wanders out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead. If you continue roaming, you can lose your life or ministry. As you use your phone to do legitimate searches, different things may pop up here and there, if you are a wanderer, you will lose focus and continue to browse, and go here and there. You may not know, but it is true that records are being kept of where you go on the net and the kinds of things you indulge in. It shows the people you follow. All these things, when they are wrong leave your conscience seared, and you lose your convictions. People around you may not know, but God knows and artificial intelligence behind the apps and sites have your records. May the Lord keep us in Jesus name. 3. THE DENUNCIATION AND DESTINY OF ASSERTIVE WILFULNESS (Genesis 49:6-7; Zechariah 7:11–13; Acts 5:31; Ezekiel 36:25–27) Wilful people are stubborn. They don't take careful note of their thoughts, actions and projects they pursue. They forget about the consequences of their actions. That is why a son would speak to his father anyhow and a daughter will behave in a very rude and unthinkable manner to her mother, and the younger person will forget all the contributions of older family member to his/her life. There is always consequences for all our actions. The anger of the two brothers was evil and cruel. Their action cut short the lives of innocent people in the city and their offspring. The king and his family were also destroyed, all because of Dinah. What was her future? When and how did she get married? What was the programme of her life? This person they were protecting had no future, and they destroyed their own future too. B. THE BLESSEDNESS OF THE ATTITUDE OF NON-RETALIATION As we look at the teachings of our Lord, we see how we should be, and who we should be. We then choose whether to be bitter or blessed. 1. MARRIAGE RELATIONSHIP WITH REPROBATES FORBIDDEN BY GOD (Genesis 34:7-10; Deuteronomy 7:1-3; Joshua 23:12-13; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18) Even if they agree to be circumcised, and they follow you to church, change their dressing, sing your song, and do all that you want them to do, you shall not make marriages with unbelievers. Don't give them your daughters, and don't take theirs for your sons in marriage. You or your family must never be unequally yoked with unbelievers. We need to ensure that our sons and daughters are really born again and righteous. The fact that they are our children or dress as we do does not make them automatically born again. There must be that conviction that they have repented of their sins, and believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, not because of us, but because they want to. There is no agreement with the temple of God and idols. Watch and pray over them, instruct them in the way they ought to go and make sure that they really have the conviction, they must know what the Bible says on every issue. 2. MALICIOUS REVENGE AND RETALIATION FOUND AMONG THE GODLESS (Genesis 34:7,25-29; 27:41; 1 John 3:12; Mark 6:18–20,24) Cain and Abel were brothers. Cain offered a sacrifice that God would not accept from the work of his hands. Abel also offered and God accepted his own offering. Abel did not suspect that Cain was angry with him. Let us be very careful in our lives. If you master anger and always cover it, why not use the same energy to seek the face of God for help? God will answer and cleanse you, and your life will become straight and transparent. When you have issues with anyone, you call the person and sort things out with him/her. Be angry at the wrong actions, but never at the person involved. This is better than bottling up and hiding your anger. Cain killed his brother because his work was righteous and his own work was evil. 3. MERCIFUL REDEMPTION AND RECONCILIATION FOUNDED ON GRACE (Luke 18:13-14; Hebrews 2:17-18; 4:14–16; JUDE vs 20-21) We need the grace of God because it is what makes us compassionate. It is the conviction we have in Christ that makes us truly loving and friendly, redeemed and willing to reconcile rather than give the final penalty after something has happened. Simeon and Levi, it takes two to go into such a relationship, and your sister whom you are defending is still there, enjoying what she started. Why would you deal with only one person and spare your sister? You are telling her to go as far, high and deep as she wants to go because you will always protect her. We have to be very careful. The Jews brought a woman caught in adultery, leaving the man behind. That is partiality in judgment. We must be fair to all. Jesus did not go towards the same direction with them but told them that any of them who is guiltless should cast the first stone. Let us come boldly to the throne of grace. Anytime you are offended by someone, go in and pray to God for mercy. Pray for yourself as Christ may come at any time. Then pray for the person who is responsible for your boiling heart. Ask for mercy and change of mind and thoughts for him/her. Then come out and be God-like in compassion, and reconciliation. We as children of God must behave, act and do all things in the power of the Holy Ghost. Draw a circle representing the love of God and step inside and anything that happens, keep yourself in it. No word, action or facial expression will come outside the love of God. C. TRUE BELIEVERS WITH THE ARMOUR OF RIGHTEOUSNESS The armour, instruments and tools we carry, are they of righteousness? What will our attitude be like? Is it a true reflection of the life of a believer or otherwise? 1. THE RECKLESSNESS IN THE PATH OF LAWLESSNESS (Genesis 34:30-31; 4:13–15; 37:19-20,31–35; 38:24–26) Bring yourself under control if you are saved, and sanctified. As a child of God, don't be lawless because lawless people are reckless. They act, speak, approach life recklessly, they drive the vehicle of their lives recklessly. They are reckless against their neighbours, husbands, wives, children, they don't care about anyone. Reckless people are not favoured by the Lord, so, don't walk in the path of lawlessness. Jacob was troubled by the actions of his sons because they gave him so much trauma, but they did not understand the position of their father. Simeon, Levi, "Should you in anger destroy a whole city?" "Should you deceive those people to be circumcised and then wipe them out?" They ask: "Should he have dealt with our sister like an harlot?" We ask: "Should you have killed Hamor and Shechem?" "Should you in retaliation send people to eternal perdition because of that single offense? "Should you have the final say over them and make them perish?" They were reckless because they were lawless. 2. THE REVELATION DURING THE PERIOD OF THE LAW (Leviticus 19:17-18; Proverbs 20:22; 24:29,17-19; 1 Samuel 24:17-22) You can rebuke anyone who has wronged you. Someone and Levi would have said: "Shechem, if you are to marry, let's take Dinah home first, what happened should not have happened. We will talk to daddy and mummy first. But note that what you did was wrong". Make your position over issues known, don't use deception or diplomacy. Do not avenge or bear any grudge against the children of your people. Love your neighbour as yourself, God is the Lord. 3. OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS AS PARTAKERS OF HIS LOVE (Romans 12:17–19; 1 Thessalonians 5:15; 1 Peter 2:21–25; 3:8–12) Do not repay evil with evil. It is normal for offenses to come. In the family of God, make your heart known. No gruge-bearing, no stabbing at the back, no copying the lifestyle of these brothers, don't kill anyone or his vision. The mission and ministry is all about Christ. If your brother and sister are carrying on the ministry and commission, you ought to lend a helping hand. Don't allow retaliation, fight or quarrel to start from you. Support everyone to fulfill the great commission. Make up your mind that your life will be a life of grace, love and showing mercy and compassion on others. As much as it is in your power, live peacebly with others. Avenge not yourself. Take it out of your life and ministry. Jesus did not avenge for Himself. Give place to wrath and anger. Ask for grace, mercy and redemption from the Lord. Leave things in the hands of God, and let Him work them out. Conclusion: Romans 12:17-19 •17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. • 18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. • 19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. The evil, action and anger of the world will not change us. We will live holy and righteously. We should not have the old nature of anger, revenge and bitterness. Settle any issue with whoever offends you first and don't care about what they are doing. We must live by the love and affection of heaven. Check yourself, is that old nature still there?
