Despite official silence on the receipt of N13.5billion Paris Club refund paid into Kogi State government account, the fact is well known to all. Whether Governor Yahaya Bello announce this officially or not, we are also aware that the money was release based on an agreement to use 70% of the funds to pay workers and pensioners their emoluments. The official silence only confirm our fears that the Legend of Unpaid Salaries is not willing to part away with 70% of the Paris Club refund for ‘only workers’. 70% of the fund is just N9.45billion. I intentionally leave out the last two allocations received without payment of salaries before October. We know the only achievement during these two months was APC primaries. It was an expensive project.

Aside the recent windfall, the state government got N4.2billion barely a week ago as statutory monthly allocation. That means N17.7billion is cooling off in Kogi state government account. Even with the spurious claims by the state government that the monthly wage bill is N2.8billion, Yahaya Bello can safely pay 6 months salary to ALL workers with enough change to play around with. Is it not curious that despite owing hundreds of workers about 30months salary arrears just because their names are not GYB Cleared List the government is still claiming they pay N2.8billion as monthly salary? This is a huge joke!

Two weeks ago, they raise the hopes of workers that salaries will be paid this week. That was immediately after collecting N4.2billion allocation. This week will end tomorrow but the Legend of Unpaid Salaries is yet to pay a single dime to any worker. Between the time they promised and now, they have received additional N13.5billion as Paris Club refund. Why is Yahaya Bello always finding it difficult to do the right thing? If a major political activity comes up today, Yahaya Bello will dole out humongous funds to show he is ‘in charge’. Who bewitched this young man? Who did we offend in Kogi state?

The state of workers in the state is worrisome. Most of them are now battling with one ailment or the other due to frustration. Go to public and private hospitals around the state and you ill confirm this. The doctors in public hospitals are attending to them on empty stomach. Traders are selling their products on credit with no assurance that the buyers will pay anytime soon. Privates schools now allow payment of school fees on installment – payable when able. Many have taken their cars to butchers in Lokoja (around Dunamis bridge and Kabawa-Galilee area) who dismantle their cars and sell it part by part. What is the essence of driving a car when your children are at home because you can’t pay their school fees? How will a worker feed his/her family and maintain a car at the same time?

Kogi indigenes living outside the state are understandably tired of the unending cries for assistant from the relatives who work under Kogi state government and local governments. They are beginning to doubt their fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, uncles and aunties who constantly beg to financial assistance to cater for basic needs. These God-fearing Kogi indigenes who work outside the state deserves commendation because they have saved thousands of lives in Kogi. But for their regular assistance, Kogi state will be a mass grave yard by now.

The question I will like to ask Yahaya Bello today is; how many more civil servants have to die before you pay their salary?
